I imagine they've already lost a lot of business to other platforms for indie games though, it's just easier to happen upon new stuff elsewhere whilst Steam is a bit like the App store for Apple, too much crap to get many random decent finds.

They need to start curating the store more or reduce fees for everyone to 20% in my opinion.

yep - I have been saying for ages that their model of not curating games has resulted with tons of shovelware, ruining the store. But hey ho I usually discover my games via reviews and previews in mags.

Steam delivered 15 billion gigabytes of data in 2018:

Holy shit... that's, like, three copies of Gears of War 4!

Yes I posted this just so I could make that joke... ¬_¬

Could someone explain to me how Steam's badges/cards/booster packs work? I've gradually collected stuff from games and I have no idea what to do with them, so I've neither sold them nor "converted" them into anything. Should I be?

Crafting badges from complete sets of cards increases your Steam level which gives you more friend list spots and allows you to put emblems on your account. It's mostly pointless and you are probably better off just selling all the cards.

Yeah, I just sell all my cards.

I just sell 'em too. I tend to use a chrome extension called something like Steam inventory helper tat makes selling most things a one click job.

Handy when you have hundreds of them. Got a few cheap games off the back of the sales.

Ooh, this sounds wonderful! I often wish they had a “sell all at buy orders” button.

If you craft the badges then you also get little random rewards, like emotes and profile backgrounds relevant to that particular game. I use a few emotes because I tend to make use of the friends chat system quite a lot, but you're actually better off just selling your cards and buying the odd emote that you like the look of for a few pence rather than taking time to craft the badges.

Coupled with selling junk TF2 and CS:GO items I managed to get my wallet balance up to about a tenner a year or so ago. It's handy for when you see the odd sub £5 game in a sale.

Got a link to the specific one? Sounds awesome - I don't sell mine because it's such a massive undertaking to sell any amount of them.

Fair dos.
You can go into settings and say only on specific sites and just add Steam.

But that might be a bit advanced for some users.
