Still playing Clear Sky.

It's good, but I want it to be over now.

I want to play Ace Combat 7, but much expensive it is.

Instead I picked up 5 & 0, since I missed out on them (and 4 again since why not for £2). Underneath the PS2 era graphics is a frantic and intense arcade flight combat game which can still surprise today. So many close calls and enemy jets zooming right past during dogfights and the missile alerts and dumb radio chatter. Good stuff.

Ace Combat is possibly the series I've most been mistaken for playing. Multiple times have I encountered people who assumed I was an AC fan, but in reality I'd never heard of it until 2006 or so.

Not quite sure what the telltale signs are for spotting a AC fan is. Does your everyday life revolve around flying fighter jets against enemy doomsday weapons, and it's all narrated by a (at times) dramatic Japanese scriptwriter?

Not that I'm aware of. But would I know?

Return of the Obra Dinn

Good gravy, this is certainly worth a look. For those who have remained oblivious to it, I'd suggest keeping it that way and going in with as little info as possible. The basic gist is that you have to piece together what happened to the crew of a 19th century (I think?) ship. While it's not perfect in terms of the game mechanics, the experience is unique and often unsettling in the most brilliant, slow-building manner. I don't think I've been this unnerved since playing the Cradle in Thief 3.

Ha, yeah, it's been sitting on my Steam wish-list since release, have been waiting for a bit of a sale but it's been resistant to any discount thus far.

DOOM

The 1993 one. Just found it on GOG for less than £1.79. Such a great game.

Indeed it is. One of the few perfect games along with Tetris.

Also...yay Doug! :D

It's funny, I watched my friends play it in the 90s and I remember thinking it looked fun, and I think I have played it myself, perhaps just once, sometime in the last two decades (I forget when), but this time is the first time I've played it and can really consciously appreciate it for the work of artistic and coding genius that it is.

It’ll always be in the my top 5 of all time. It never seems to age.

Masters of Doom is worth a read. It won’t take you long and it’s wuite entertaining and fascinating.

I have also been playing Wolfenstein 3D and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure.

I originally started playing them as research for a custom board game project I am currently working on, which blends elements from both into a dungeon-crawl format, but they are surprisingly fun games, and, like DOOM, I appreciate them now far more for their technical precision and artistic style, than I ever did in the 90s when they were new.

Blast from the past there, I played that through to the end (I often failed to complete RPGs - still do actually) and loved it!

My overriding memory of it is that you can punch Hitler.

And the biplane! Oh god, the biplane. I was only about 7 when I played it, but I'm pretty certain no human ever deciphered how the biplane controls were meant to work.
