Astrologaster

A little oddity that popped up on Steam the other day. Looked intriguing and wasn't expensive so thought what the heck. And glad I did! I can't really think of another game quite like it. Basically you play a real-life Elizabethan doctor, Simon Forman, who helped cure the bubonic plague in London. After doing so patients begin to come to you with various cases, which you solve through a process of listening to their symptoms and consulting astrological charts to diagnose them. All of this is delivered in a really nice animated pop-up book style (you manually drag the pages over to go to a new scene), and each patient is introduced with a 15th century-style madrigal which are often very funny but also exceptionally composed and recorded (for an indie game). Basically, think Blackadder II for the type of humour on show. Never crude but nevertheless amusing. If you don't mind something unusual, well worth a look.
My sister worked on this one -- she was the medical consultant for 16th century diseases/ailments.
Awesome! :D

It really was a fun little game, recommended for anyone looking for something a bit different.

Minion Masters

1v1 or 2v2. It's a card based strategy game a bit like that Magic The Gathering one that came out a couple of years ago. Your mana bar charges on a consistent basis and you spend it by throwing out various costed cards which then march towards your opponents half of the map to attack their hero/keep. The map is split into two lanes with a bridge in the centre of each, which if you have control of increases your XP, allowing your hero to level up and use certain boons or skills to tip the battle in your favour.

It's fast paced and really entertaining, there's an amusing variety of units and it seems like it has potential for an interesting set of deck combinations depending on how you want to play.

Free to play though and as usual with these games you are constantly bombarded with things on the menu. I'm not sure whether there's any pay to win element yet, but I'm having a blast with it so far and haven't spent any money.
I've had a few games of this on your recommendation. I agree. It's not bad at all.

Way too much screen clutter on the menus, but the gameplay itself isn't half bad.

That said, i'm seeing a number of stability issues, which mean me crashing out when i'm about to win.... that needs some work!

Played some Minion Masters myself the last few days and it's a lot like Clash Royale, right down to people with better minions having the advantage. It was fun for a while but you hit a point where you need better cards and the only way you get them is to pay money.

yeah i can totally see that happening to be fair. I'm just waiting for it, but i only just got to stone level.

I've also been dabbling with Moonlighter this week. Fairly typical roguelite, that mixes part night dungeon hunting with a risk reward factor (if you die you lose 90% of inventory loot) with a bit of a pointless town shop day activity, where you sell the loot to raise funds for upgrades.

tbh i think the game could have done without this second mini-game - it detracts from the dungeoning without adding much, at least to me. Progression is gated mainly around getting the gear and grinding the gold, which lessens its value to me, weakening any skill based progression.

But it's cutesy enough with its graphical style and fun for a few hours. Bargain bin pickup in my estimation.

I haven't found that to be the case at all so far, but then I'm only in Gold rank and I think there's a few above that. What I've found, particularly with 2v2 is that it's more just about smart use of what cards you have. Some of the really early free cards are actually excellent and are still in my deck. I haven't spent any money yet either.

It's just a case of having to play it a fair amount to get the resources that let you buy random pack tokens, or craft the specific cards you want with shards which are fairly easy to amass.

It's very much going to depend on what cards you got out of the chests as you went along, if you managed to grab some good cards it's going to lead to a different experience. This is all for 1v1 btw.

You’re Death and you have to fight zombie gangs, vampire gangs etc.. in a weird drug story.

Really enjoying this. I guess you could call it a side on Hotline Miami that looks a bit Gunpointy in that it’s one hit deaths and fairly hard with near retry so you can keep hammering it if you keep dying.

With Borderlands 3 coming out later this year, I decided to revisit BL1. I was doing a proper Roland Heavy Gunner build in single player, so I sped through the first playthrough missing most of the sidequests, then things got nicely challenging in the 2nd playthrough.

Although BL2 is a better game, I reckon BL1 might actually have the better 4 main characters to choose from, when it comes to doing a full build.

I just love the BL gameplay; there's something indescribably fun about the whole thing and I find it never gets old.

Yeah. I've actually never got further than about 15 hours into BL2 for some reason, probably because as you say, the characters and builds just aren't as good (for me, anyway) as the first game. I loved my Brick BL1 playthrough, just going full berserker and punching everything to death. Roland with his turrets is good, too. Haven't really gelled with any of the BL2 characters, the only one I really got on with at all is the one who can send out a battle mech as her special ability (can't remember the name).

Morrowind again, but with mods installed and a mage-build.

The tweaks from the mods has made it challenging at times. I tend to spend most of my time summoning four different creatures and hiding behind them (AI was shit then. Fighting a few enemies at once can be a problem as all summons tend to piss off and fight one enemy, leaving you exposed to the warhammer wielding Orc you WANT them to fight). Nevertheless, great fun.

Morrowind's magic system is amazing, in that it lets you create your own spells with no consideration for how game-breaking or ridiculously OP they might be. Oblivion dialled that down a lot, but it was still generous in what it let you do. One of the many reasons that, as much as I love Skyrim, it can't hold a candle to Morrowind.

Definitely. I played Morrowind on release and somehow managed to almost completely avoid ever using spells (admittedly god mode was used a fair bit).

Unsure some of the potion buff/game breaking spell and enchantment creation is possible with the addons I've installed but I could basically nuke an entire city with the right spell now/eventually. I think the only downside is that you don't regen magicka, although there's mods for that too. I did feel that subsequent games made magic feel meatier though, but I think that's just as a result of improvement in graphics, sound and the effect of ragdoll. I'd quite like magic to be expanded upon in the next ES. If it's ever released.

Mechromancer.

I played one but found it ultimately annoying, as your special ability was to summon something that killed the mobs for you with no input needed. Kinda felt it robbed me of playing the game.

I enjoyed playing as the Gunzerker on my first playthrough, although he got properly OP later in the game. Second (or third) time around I played the Psycho which was a lot of fun, although similarly OP.

Thanks Alan, that looks right up my alley. Bought.

Recently replayed Mark of the Ninja which is such a great little game. I particularly love the different costume effects, my favourite being the one that panics any guard coming across their assassinated buddies.
