Favourite Games

Post by Stormbringer » Wed Aug 22, 2018 11:31 am

I know we talked about this before, but I want to keep it going here.

What is/are your favourite game(s) of all time? The smaller the list the better, because I'm talking about really deeply entrenched, lifelong favourites here, rather than whatever has caught your attention at the moment.

I'm still going to say mine is the original MS-DOS version of Prince of Persia from 1990. It's not just a favourite memory because, as I said in this thread, it's still available to play today and from my perspective has not really "aged" at all, neither visually or in terms of playability.

I also like how it has a classic and simple fairy-tale plot: "Save the princess from an evil wizard!" -- nothing overly complex or cynical.

I'm only going to include this one game on my list, because, every other game I like only seems to be a temporary affair. PoP is the one game that I have always liked consistently for 28 years and will still happily play any time.

DOOM and Tetris.

2 perfect video games.

There's more, but I shall elaborate later as I'm off out at the mo.

Oh thats the original DOOM btw not that Bethesda nonsense. :P

DOOM
I should really give that another go, especially since it's so cheap on GOG. Not played it for years. My main reasons for not doing so are:

1. I'm worried it might ruin my memories of it.

2. Motion sickness. Anyone have problems with that and old FPS games?

I played the PSX version of it a few years back on an emulator and had a great time with it. I kinda preferred the moody synth soundtracks to the tinny metal PC soundtrack.

Quake

I'm pretty sure this was my first-ever "proper" PC game. It's certainly the one I remember getting for a birthday/Xmas/whenever it was. Me and a mate played endless hours of LAN deathmatch against each other. Later down the line we played direct-dial modem to modem (local calls to other Telewest numbers were free at the time) and eventually online with QuakeWorld/GameSpy/etc (Remember 2fort5?! Classic!).

The soundtrack from NiN was awesome, too. Great, great game. Maybe one day I'll even complete it!
I even had all the official expansion packs, and a couple of third-party ones too.

Quake also taught me how to code in C, since there were game mods, compiled using "Quake C". I downloaded the source for one (I forget the name), and created my own insane version with insta-kill axe, remote-control rockets which could hover mid-air, and some other stuff that I don't remember anymore. I wonder if I can find that original mod…

Like with the film thread I'll probably sporadically remember titles, but as a starting point:

Witcher 3
Baldur's Gate 2
Divinity Original Sin 2
Anachronox
Mass Effect 1&2
Stalker (while CoP was the better game, I would still say I enjoyed the original more)
XCOM 2
Tales from the Borderlands

In terms of games that meant the most to me over the years:

Deus Ex
Baldurs Gate 2
Stalker COP
Medieval 1: Total War
System Shock 2

Hey, I like that music a lot. It's like cyber-dungeon-synth.

Battlefield 2.

My favourite online gaming memories were spent playing BF2 when I was younger. It was the peak of the series. Intense, but not too clusterfucky (with the exception of Strike at Karkand, at times...). Enough class variation that people are specialised enough to be forced into more teamwork, along with the larger squads, SL spawn system, commander system, etc. So much better than the current BF systems. The game felt slower than the current games in the series too.

DOOM

That's the 2016 Bethesda nonsense, not the original. I do still love the original mind. There isn't another shooter I've played that controls so utterly perfectly, with combat this satisfying. Looks great, sounds great, runs like shit off a shovel when others would chug. The boss fights are perhaps a little disappointing, but that's it. Everything else is perfect.

Doom 2
Doom is perfect, Doom 2 is perfect and Final Doom is perfect. Each is a perfect escalation of the last but I feel 2 is the sweet spot. The final boss is both awful and amazing (with no clip) and that’s the only real negative I can say about it. I feel level design is stronger than Doom overall and difficulty on ultraviolence is the best balanced (Final gets real crazy!). I’ve finished every officially released version and most unofficially ported versions too! It’s so bloody good!

System Shock 2
As soon as you apply the atmospheric mod (turn off the fucking music!) you’re left with the best survival horror game around. It’s ugly as sin but it doesn’t matter, it’s still oozing atmosphere. The Polito moment might be the only time I’ve took my hands off the crontrols to sit back and go “oh fuuuuuck!”

Fallout 2
It’s a refinement of 1, though like Doom it’s a hard choice. The combat is so satisfying - something I feel Original Sin has built on wonderfully. The art, setting, feel..... the epic feeling of traveling over the world map praying you don’t get ambushed because you have no supplies. The writing, the choices and the bloody mess. I feel like the Bethesda games have cheapened the early ones for me but when I think back I still get chills for this where 3 and 4 just leave me cold.

Street Fighter 4
The hours I sunk into this on all platforms must be 1000+. I have always and still so love the series but 4 clicked with me more than all the rest. From the first screenshots I was laughing at it and how dumb it looked and how 3rd Strike was better in every way. Then I got it in my hands and ended up playing it for hours a day. I do love 5 but in my heart I want 4 back.

Eve Online
The single most incredible accomplishment in game development. The economy alone is a miracle that it didn’t just collapse never mind the rest. No other game has made me feel so small and then so big. No other game leaves my heart pounding out my chest. No other game ever gave me the same feeling of comradery, of accomplishment, of loss, of victory. I can’t big it up enough. It is SO hard to get into if you try to go it alone, like I did the first few years, but if you find someone to take you under their wing it evolves into such a beast. The skill system means that you really don’t need to grind, especially if you stick to small ships (the most fun ones!). It’s older than WoW and still looks up to date, CCP have done such a cracking job of keeping it going. I wish I could find the time to get back into it and add on to the literal months of play game I have in it over the years.

Castlevanita Circle Of The Moon
It was either this or Dawn Of Sorrows. I think Dawn is probably the best game in the series but I have a real soft spot for Circle. I love the card system and the janky movement and crappy graphics. Ive finished it a good 10-15 times. Symphony is a phenomenal game with cracking music but I just like these two more.

Last Of Us, Original Sin, Red Alert, Mass Effect 2 and Dan Dare also deserve mentions. As do many other games that have slipped my mind!

Super Mario 64
Probably the first game I have a lasting memory of as a Good Game (rather than things like Gorilla or POD on the PC that were basically only great because they were the only thing available at the time). I had a SNES beforehand, but this is the first game I have a proper memory of loving and just wanting to play non-stop.

Ocarina of Time
Much like SM64, this was a formative game in my life. I remember being excited to get into school each Monday to catch up with another kid who had it to see where we had both got to over the weekend. It basically is the game that got me into computer gaming. As much as I've enjoyed later Zelda games, nothing has come close to the pure joy of my first foray into that universe.

Deus Ex
Up until Deus Ex, I had been a distinctly Console gamer (much preferring my SNES then N64 over my next door neighbours MegaDrive then PlayStation). Deus Ex was pivotal shift in my interest towards the PC. The freedom and narrative depth and breadth was mind blowing.

Anachronox
This is definitely my wildcard entry, but I loved this game when I borrowed it from a friend. I loved the wacky humour and crazy hijinx. I was so happy when GoG finally released it, though of course it doesn't stand up to the test of time when things have progressed so much. It was a flawed game in a lot of ways, but great fun for me at the time I originally played it.

Witcher 3
I love a good RPG and this was a game changer. Before it, I enjoyed Elder Scrolls and Fallout but before reaching the end of the main story arch I would tire of the game and give up. Not Witcher 3. I loved every moment of it, even if I was just spending a free half hour enjoy a stroll through the immense land they had created. I really can't wait for Cyberpunk 2077. I just hope it doesn't go all Deus Ex 2 on me.

Medieval 1: Total War
<3.

Still the most atmospheric, and dare I say, pure Total War experience there ever was. It helps that when it came out I was utterly and completely obsessed with all things medieval (not to say I'm not still a bit obsessed), but man, what a game!

Yeah, everything just came together in that TW game. The battles were at their most attritional, and the strategic side the most refined. Aesthetically the best also.

That said, I felt Shogun 2 was a massive return to form and only just falls short of it. Partly due to the mountainous campaign map creating much bolder strategic gameplay. Plus the setting was lovely.
