Wildstar MMO to shut down

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/0 ... lose-down/

I played this for a very short time when it went FTP - which incredibly was some three years ago now - and to be honest didn't really find very much to grab me in either the world or combat, both of which at once felt a bit simplistic and overly confusing.

It is sad to learn about the closure of the studio behind it, however.

As long as the juggernaut MMOs like WoW continue to draw in the bulk of the market I don't think many big budget contenders will be able to compete in the long run.

Yeah very tough market the MMO one. You need to be doing something very special to make a go of it I think.

I really liked the look of the combat system in Wildstar, but by the time it was released World of Warcraft had been going for ten years, with an ungodly amount of money spent on it. I don't think it's possible to compete with a game that established, so just as with all the other suitors, it was left to pick up the scraps from the people willing to pay a monthly subscription. By the time it went free to play, it was too late.
