In praise of your favourite indies

Post by Achtung Englander » Tue Sep 25, 2018 11:00 pm

Currently playing Inside and it is brilliant. Got it as part of the Origin Access subscription which I must admit is superb value for money.

Notable indies I have played and recommend

Apotheon

Capsized

FTL

Lara Croft & The Guardian Of Light

Peggle

Limbo

I think I am getting more fun from indies than I am from AA or AAA at the moment.

What are yours ?

Hated indie:

They are Billions. Just a fine, tight well designed RTS and I'm not generallya fan of RTS's.

Battle Brothers. For me, one of the best and most addictive games of the last decade.

So much this. I just keep coming back to this, have racked up over 200 hours in it (which includes Early Access).

Will do a few list of indies on my Steam list when I've a bit of time...

It really is. It has a feel of Mount and Blade at times, but with turn-based combat and a much greater emphasis on the people who form your company. A new hireling may start off as a blank canvas with a spear in his hand, but he'll quickly become Erik the Bold who lost an eye but unexpectedly saved the day against a bandit raid that had gone horribly wrong. And then when Erik is later unceremoniously killed, it will hurt.

Not sure how indie Guardian of Light and Peggle are given that they were published by Square Enix and EA. The Lara Croft game was even made by a sub team at Crystal Dynamics.

I think Terraria has been the most successful indy game I've played in terms of my overall play time. Remember Soldat? The little side-scrolling deathmatch game with jetpacks from years ago? It sorta feels like someone turned that into an RPG. It plays brilliantly, and has you going from building your first hut to keep you safe from the zombies that come at night, to demi-god flying through the air raining hellfire down upon anything that would dare occupy the near vicinity. It gets unfairly compared to Minecraft just because it has building and mining mechanics, but it's a full adventure game with tons of content, numerous bosses, and a much more action-packed style of gameplay.

No doubt. In my mind an indie is a smallish game with fewer game mechanics or development values regardless who made it or published it. That is just me I suppose.

That's an interesting point actually. Indie in my mind is with no ties to bigger publishers regardless of team size. The game can be as big and complex as it likes.

When I read through your list, I did think I don't class some of these as an indie game.

Indie is just short for independent.

But then does it really matter? Lets just geek over smaller/lesser known games.

Has no-one mentioned Stardew Valley yet? That was ace, especially considering it was a one-man team.

Definitely - I've put more hours into Stardew Valley than I care to think about. I've a feeling that's going to happen again soon.

Volgarr the Viking

Between tedium and fright
Such is the song of the nether world
The hissing of rats
And the jarring chants of angels
