According to reports the deal is a matter of when, not if:

Not quite sure what that will mean for them. At least it's not EA, I guess :/

I can't see this ending well.

They’ve not really put out anything I’ve loved. Amazing talent, amazing legacy but it doesn’t come together for my tastes. All this means is PS4 won’t get their games and they’ll be shutdown in 3-5 years because they’re rubbish at deadlines.

Just leave Larian alone! ;)

More games for Game Pass.

It's an interesting move and hopefully one that works out for both parties. It could mean that Obsidian get more resources to make the next PoE which would be a big plus.

I’d love another PoE, but chances are it will only be on the Windows store with all the stupid prices and UWP crap that entails.

Yep and quality nose diving. Sadly that is the way I see this going as the team gets moved/split/leave and it becomes like RARE eventually.

Microsoft don't have a great record when it comes to studios, but at the same time I feel the company is very different to how they were back when they bought Lionhead and Rare. Phil Spencer is a much different head of the division and I think it's wrong to assume that because of what happened in the past the same is true this time round. Additionally both Lionhead and Rare made some good games under Microsoft and Rare are not exactly in a bad place now.

The more I think about it the more I think this might have been the the only way Obsidian could survive. They have been open in the past about how close they have been to closing and they recently turned away from work-for-hire stuff so that lifeline has gone. It's hard to tell for sure, but it seems that PoE 2 sold less well than the first game and they didn't exactly have a hit with Tyranny either so it could be that they are struggling financially and this was one way out.

Microsoft buy Obsidian as rumoured... and also acquire inXile, makers of Wasteland 2:
