The “I’m not bothered about privacy because I’ve got nothing worth looking at” argument is a good way to lose your civil liberties piece by piece.

Their whole response to this has been pretty poor. The coverage hasn't been much better either, sites appear to have taken the stance that Valve = bad, Epic = good and anyone complaining about Epic's practices is just a Steam defender.

The games media in large is still salty of the time they got invited to Valve to talk about steam and they wouldn't implement what they wanted. Also why Jim Sterling has the biggest chip about steam for above as he was invited along side other big youtubers but wanted his and friends curator mark to count more on the steam store front page. They listened but didn't do anything as they are a hands off company.

It reminds me of your other comment in the Phoenix PointDjchunKfunK, about Steam could put in place about making a rule if you advertise on steam you have to be on steam on launch. The above folk would go and beat Steam = evil drum again.

Hey, who cares if it's an unethical and underhand method of spying on people's personal data, as long as you don't personally care what they're looking at, right?

That's an awful position to take.

In other news, Valve seem pretty annoyed by this, rightly, as the data can seemingly be used to promote Epic's stated purpose in displacing them, and are looking into the possibility of encrypting this data so it can't be spied on.

it is shitty but it is nothing new and I am so jaded I cannot get angry over this as on the scheme of things there is plenty more to get angry about, so I am saving my energy.

Epic are shooting themselves in the foot, so fuck them, but if all they took is a list of Steam friends, my PC HW specs and what games I play, I honestly cannot bring myself to get that angry about it

After Facebook fiasco this sort of shit is expected and given we all leave a digital footprint that is being most likely being collated by the NSA and GCHQ the horse has already bolted.

It reads what websites you're browsing too because it accesses a fair few Windows system root files, one of which includes your browser cookies.

Personal privacy and our data is going to be one of the biggest issues heading into the next few decades, so whilst it might be a bit tiresome to hear about another company behaving poorly it's important to keep calling it out. Companies are relying on people to give up.

If you want an example of how this data can be used in nefarious ways do a search for China and Social Credit System.

PCGamesN might have accidentally revealed that Outer Worlds is going to be an Epic Store exclusive. They tweeted about it and linked to a different story and now the tweet has disappeared. Apparently one of a few announcements due today, possibly as part of Epic's Unreal GDC talk.

I was actually afraid that might happen. Don't know why, just a hunch I've had for a while.

That one will really sting, even more than Phoenix Point. But, fuck it. I'll wait.

Yeah it's annoying if true.

That's really surprising if true, because Obsidian have been bought by Microsoft and it would be a big title to have on the Windows store. Not sure why an Epic store exclusive would work for them.

Outer Worlds is being produced under the Private Division label of Take Two, so isn't part of the Microsoft buyout of Obsidian.

That would explain it.

Shit. :( I was really looking forward to Outer Worlds.
