Destiny- Bungie take back control

Bungie have taken control of publishing rights for Destiny moving forward. Activision will no longer be involved. Pretty big change for the series.

Some of the reaction online are hilarious, a lot of people thinking the game will suddenly become everything they ever wanted from the series now Activison is no longer involved. Kind of ignoring the fact that Bungie already had a lot of freedom with the series.

I don't play it, but there was a lot of fuss regarding certain items being made into one-use things which you can buy more of with real money for the sequel. Changes to the grinding and microtransaction aspects are the main things that could come out of this.

I wonder whether it'll be removed from the Battle.Net launcher client as a result.

The reality is that those thinking microtransactions will disappear from future Destiny games is fanciful at best. They are part and parcel of these types of games and with Bungie taking all the financial risk there will be pressure to recoup money.

I doubt they'd disappear too, but it's almost always the publishers who force these mechanics so heavily into games and I can see them being at least marginally relaxed if Bungie has full control over it.

Maybe nothing will change at all.

Not sure I agree on it always being the publishers. There are games where microtransactions have been developer led.

It seems like Activision are one of the companies Jim Sterling did a vid about before Christmas, in terms of games constantly 'performing below expectations', while seemingly still selling like gangbusters. The devs having editorial control and not being subject to the whims of bosses with no affinity for games is probably not a bad thing in this case. Whether it leads to big improvements is unsure, however it's almost certain it won't make it worse.

Apparently when the news was announced Bungie staff were cheering and popping champagne... obviously they weren't happy dealing with Activision, which would seem to suggest at least some changes moving forward.

It's going to be interesting seeing how Bungie change Destiny 2 without the Activision influence.

They did the exact same thing when they left Microsoft.

I think that would have been controversial around the time of Halo 3, but not now. Destiny doesn't really seem to have set the world alight.
