General Gaming News

Just felt there are times when a piece of news isn't particularly relevant to an existing thread but also not necessarily worth creating a whole new one, so a bit of a catch-all thread for random game news.

On that note, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire now has a turn-based combat mode:

It hasn't quite reached the price point yet where it becomes a no-brainer for me (if it hits a tenner, I'm in), but I have to say as someone who found the combat of PoE1 a fairly dull chore after a couple of dozen hours of it, I'm quite intrigued by this.

I'll be giving the turn-based mode a whirl this weekend, so will report back. As someone who loves both PoE games (though 2 is miles better than 1), I have to say the combat was the least interesting part of it for me and I quietly wished it was turn-based. Fingers crossed it works as well as I hope.

That’s very interesting. It’s the combat I hate in PoE and BG too if I’m honest.

Nice, do let us know how it goes, could make a big difference to whether I grab it or not.

First impressions are that it's an improvement. I've not got to any major, complex battles yet, but even in fights against a couple of enemies it's refreshing to have a much greater level of control on your characters. I also don't think it slows it down that much (particularly if you set the time slider at the bottom to full) because in real-time I was pausing constantly to micromanage my party. The rules around combat have changed slightly and I'm still trying to get my head round certain things, like how and when some spells cast. It looks like there isn't a fixed initiative order - it's more that each character and action has its own initiative and they all work independently. For example, if person A has initiative 3 and person B has initiative 4, person A will have 4 actions in the same time that person B has 3 actions. I think. There's a handy turn-order at the top-right to track it all, thankfully.

Hollow Knight was pretty but the addition of colour really makes this game pop.

No E3 press conference from EA this year....

https://www.ea.com/news/announcing-ea-play-2019
We're skipping the press conference this year and are replacing it with multiple live streams that will air during the first two days of the event, bringing you more of what you've told us you want - more gameplay and insights from the teams making the games.

An unofficial game for a Disney owned, EA licensed franchise that would undoubtedly take attention away from the Battlefront series? Yeah, that's going to see the light of day.

I'll never understand why these things get publicised before they're complete; they all get cease and desist'd within days.

I find your lack of faith... entirely justified.

I imagine that it's pretty difficult to stop an excited member of the team leaking it when you're dealing with a small group of enthusiastic modders.

It's a damn shame too, because having now watched the video, the quality of the art work is staggeringly good. Granted, it's not surprising given that he's an artist at Obsidian Entertainment working on this in his spare time, but this is the kind of output we *should* be getting in modern Star Wars titles. EA have utterly wasted the license.
