Yeah, she is analogous to someone like Enid Blyton in the way she inspired young readers.
Re: Harry Potter RPG
Fair enough. It just seems weird and frustrating that every time Harry Potter is raised in adult conversation, someone has to pipe up with "yeah, but it's not the best writing ever."DjchunKfunK wrote: ↑Wed Oct 03, 2018 10:13 amIf someone is going to put JK Rowling up there with the titans of literature I don't think it's wrong to take exception to that. I'm not saying anyone here is doing that, but I've heard people do it.
God forbid anyone should ever enjoy something that isn't the absolute pinnacle of literature...

Re: Harry Potter RPG
You're right; it is extremely weird that people feel the need to pipe up with that. Why does that even matter?
She's a good writer and she's created a massively popular fantasy franchise that appeals to all ages, particularly children. There are better writers who have not.
It's a generalisation of embarrassingly titanic proportions to suggest that the "type" of people who read Harry Potter are not "the more dedicated type of gamer that this game looks like it is aiming for".

There is really no need to throw insults in, this is just a discussion.Stormbringer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 04, 2018 8:37 amYou're right; it is extremely weird that people feel the need to pipe up with that. Why does that even matter?

My argument isn't that there are not people who like Harry Potter and also like games to an extent that they would purchase, or already have, a dedicated console. My argument is that I'm not sure there is enough of them to warrant such an investment. This isn't some mobile game that can be pumped out at low cost and for low risk. We are talking about $50-$60m minimum plus advertising.
Re: Harry Potter RPG
I really think you'll be surprised just how popular it proves to be (assuming it's not a disaster).

I'm not insulting you, I'm saying it's a massive generalisation you're making which is embarrassing. I apologise if you're insulted by that, but I do think it's an absurd position.
Based on what evidence? Have you done any research to come to this conclusion, or is it just based on a feeling?

It's no more a generalisation than the one you are making. It's just an opinion, it's no less or more valid than the one you are making.

Well, I'm not actually making a generalisation here. So, your statement about the interests of literally millions of other people actually is more of a generalisation than my criticism of your statement...
It's just an opinion, it's no less or more valid than the one you are making.
I'm not "making" an opinion, I'm criticising yours. I'd say yes, your opinion actually is invalid in this instance, because it's not a matter of subjective taste, such as "I liked Book 3 best" vs "I like Book 5 best", but it's a massive assumption about masses of other people, based on no evidence. It may be an opinion, but it's not an informed opinion, and is open to criticism.

Re: Harry Potter RPG
Incidentally, I have done a little research. There hasn't been a major release for this franchise since Deathly Hallows Pt2, which was in 2011 and was universally panned due to it being an awful action game. Typically the game series came out alongside each movie over the years prior to that, and the earliest titles actually sold a good few million copies each. Philosophers Stone shifted over 8 million units in about four years from the stats I checked, which isn't bad for a 2001 release.
I imagine there would be quite an interest in a proper big budget attempt at a new instalment in the franchise, particularly given the time it's been and how poor the more recent titles were.

I'm looking forward to it. Even though I'm probably a bit old to enjoy HP.
Didn't read the whole thread, but in response to the OP, I've heard it's Avalanche studios (Disney Infinity) that's making it.
They haven't released any epic games afaik (imo), but it might be their first.
