The entire MMORPG genre passed me by during my gaming life, but I remember thinking in the past that if I had attempted one of them it would have been Guild Wars (or GW2). Mainly for the reasons put by Snowy above. Always appeared very accessible from the outside looking in.

I have no experience with other MMOs so no frame of reference, I will say I found GW2 really accessible and it sucked me in pretty quickly. I played it pretty obsessively for about a year before one day I just decided I was done and have only gone back briefly a couple of times when the expansions came back.

There's no doubt I got my money's worth from it and think it's very well done.

Wowie - i really wasn't expecting so many replies! :D

I'll update the initial post with the user id's of those playing! I think I have the following right:

Mantis, Scourge.4567
El Gaucho, El Gaucho.5278
Snowy, Snowy.9316
Sly Boots, Sly Boots.3845

Mantis - we really need to get you to heart of thorns and give you a basic boost i think - the game evolved a LOT from what you experienced, and I think you could enjoy it! Let us know when you're on - happy to explain stuff and guide you a little! :)

I still have at least one character that i want to play through HOT with, so we could do that as a group sometime. There is a little grind in Heart of Thorns to get the XP to unlock skills, but with food and utility xp boosts, it's not too bad.

Necro is definitely a good choice - although unlike Sly, i swear by Scourge, the Path of Fire specialisation - it's a thing of beauty controlling the spread of conditions everywhere, and providing barriers to your own team, plus heavy condi cleanse all in one class! Plus one of the best resurrection classes in game!

I'd be quite happy to run a low level fractal or two if anyone wants to dabble, and the guild i'm in does casual friday raiding, open to anyone, if that takes anyone's fancy. It's really nothing like the wow ones - much more laid back on the whole.

I would quite like an invite to a laid back guild. Long as they are happy to take old farts who are crap at learning game mechanics and just want to have a nice social and bumble their way along.

Timely post Gaucho, as been playing this incessantly for the last month or so after going off it (with a massive dose of MMO-fatigue) 6 years ago. Really enjoying it.

Hmm is it worth returning too though? I might try and find my username shenanigans again if we have people that could be interested in doing some of the instances. As I hardly got a chance to do that from people going back to wow here :(

it depends what your concerns are. GW2 is very accessible - you having years worth of content is something many of us vets are jealous of - being able to enjoy a lot of this stuff for the first time was amazing!

In terms of catching up - get to 80, pick up some exotic gear (which is cheap), and jump into some content! :)

You can find some decent builds for different game types on metabattle: http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki

You're very welcome to join for my guild's Friday raids, usually around 7pm - 7:30 UTC, or 6pm uk time. We do also have a couple of spots for progression content on Tuesdays. We've struggled for regular attendance for a while, so if instance content is your thing, we'd take anyone on and we're happy to explain. We're just looking for people who can more or less consistently show one day a week. :D

I offered snowy yesterday that we could do some instances if people wanted to, so that too, if we can agree a day and time!

If a group of peeps from the forum are looking to fill a group for dungeons or fractals then I'm up for that.

I already seem to be a part of a couple of guilds with a bunch of PW peeps, it shows me as a member of the burning hand and old school grumps or something like that.

I'd be up for working towards doing some of the challenge raids as a group, never done any of them on this game clearly and I used to really enjoy the endgame dungeons on the original game.

Does it matter what server you're on?

A bit, yes. You can guest to other servers but ideally you want to be the same one as most of the other people you hope to be playing with.

OSG and TBH are both dormant / inactive Mantis - i've sent you an invite to TCS - you'll find a bunch of friendly folk on there!

Regarding servers - doesn't matter at all, EXCEPT for world vs world. Eventually, that too will be redesigned so it's not too important unless you plan to do a lot of wvw now. In PVE everyone is on shared servers for the map. If more players are going to one map at a certain time, then new instances of the map open up for the players. Some maps, like Tangled Depths and Dragon's Stand, can have queues to get on the main shard when big events are starting (people want to be on maps with commanders).

But other than that, just play what you want, where you want.

current wvw leaderboards if it does impact anyone:
https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en-gb/eu/wvw

That said, to move servers for free you need to delete ALL characters on your account, or have a new account. Otherwise it will cost, and is really only done by whole alliances really into wvw when they move as a group.

If you are on the fence - do it. It is really good fun, loads of choice over what you do, and it is free as well given you already own it and that there is no sub (excepting expansions etc, but you can buy those as and when you decide you are going to stick around).

Do it. Come join us.

EDIT: On the guild front, you can be a member of a number of them and just switch on which you wish to represent.

EDIT EDIT: Rusty has a freebie HOT expansion key going begging in the Now Playing thread - first to PM him wins a donut. And the key.

Anyone want to do a dungeon or some such other content this evening?

If the stars align and we can get a group together, sure, I'll be a part of that.

This week saw a bit of new content for GW2, with the launch of the Warclaw, the first wvw enabled mount, and bringing the total mounts up to seven, after the amazing beetle launch from last year!

Fortunately it's very easy to get, IF you can get into wvw. it's very active at the moment given that everyone wants to unlock it.

fwiw - it doesn't change much in PVE, and is a fairly slow mount compared to even the unupgraded raptor, but it might be an alternative if you want a mount and don't want to start POF story. You do need the expansion to have mounts though.
