Been playing this as well. More of the same is the definite vibe I get from it, but that's not a bad thing. The missions still have that sense of cinematic urgency, and there is a lot to do just wandering around.

I am not yet convinced to part with cash for it, but I probably will do at some stage.

It's more of the same but improved I think. The AI is much better, with enemies trying to flank you, the higher tier enemies are not as bullet spongy as they used to be and there is a lot more to do and see in the world with exploration really rewarded. On top of that the combat still feels good. I'll probably be picking this up at launch.

I recall my biggest issue with the original was the dearth of variety on offer. There were only a handful of active skills, even fewer that were actually interesting to use, and the weapons took the worst element of random loot systems (tiny increments in stats that were barely noticeable) while ignoring all of the fun bits (damage types, special bonuses more interesting than x% increased damage to headshots or similar) because of the realistic setting. Add to that the very samey mission design and similar environments, and it just did everything it could to avoid grabbing my attention.

Does the new one do anything to rectify these issues?

There seems to be a lot more variety in the missions. Loot is pretty much the same at low levels, but in the first game they added higher tier loot that did more interesting things. There are more skills now and you have perks as well which is different I think. I didn't really dig into the skill system that much.

Environments are more varied now, more open spaces and without the snow things look different.

Just what is the point of buying a physical copy of a game if you're then required to download two blu rays worth of patch to be able to play it? I know that The Division is an online-focused title so it's not as if you should expect to be able to play it without downloading anything, but 90gb is insane. Have they changed every asset in the game or something?

I think this might be Eurogamer misreading the website, or the website not being clear, they say at the bottom of the story that it says the update is 54-50gbs just like on PC and Xbox.

That's been updated since I originally read the article. While it makes more sense to have size parity between the versions, even a 50gb day one patch is ludicrous. It'd be a bit more palatable if it was, for example, optional super high-def content for the 4k consoles, but with a 50gb patch they're basically throwing away most of the data that's held on the blu ray. It's that, or the blu ray simply doesn't contain all of the required data, which is equally stupid.

I think it's understandable with these types of game, you need to send the data off to print quite far in advance of the release and they will have continued to work on the game since then. So it's kind of unavoidable.

But if you're publishing a game with a physical edition, you're pressing discs, creating millions of cases, shipping them around the world... and then they're useless. It's massively wasteful, and all it really serves to do is annoy people who buy a physical copy who then can't play the game for two days because of how long it takes to download. Just ship cardboard packaging with a product key or something.

What's the alternative? You need that lead time to get the physical editions out, it's pretty much unavoidable with the way these types of games are made.

I'm not disputing that, I'm just saying that there's no point in putting out discs if the majority of data on those discs is just being discarded. The transport costs, the amount of plastic being used for worthless packaging, all of that energy being wasted; it's just not necessary. Stick a download code in a sealed cardboard package if you're going to insist in ridiculous day one downloads like this. The *only* reason they bother is that they currently need to keep the established retailers on side because otherwise they won't get their hardware sold - that's becoming an increasingly outdated need, and the console manufacturers are starting to launch consoles that cannot accept physical media.

Not coming to Steam but will be on the new Epic Games Store. Presumably you'll launch it through the client and then it'll force you to log in to the uPlay client in order to play, as seems to be the way with all Ubisoft PC games nowadays.
Not just Steam, turns out it wont be coming to any third-party digital distributor after launch...

Yeah that's par for the course for anything Epic has exclusive rights to, it's why so many people are unhappy at Epic buying exclusivity.

It's going to be great having all these games to play in a year's time...

I just bought the game through Uplay, already have stuff on there and I'm unlikely to get my credit card details stolen, unlike on the Epic store.
