An extra successful store will only increase the chance for big sales though....

Epic have said they wont be having Sales, will be up to individual developers to set the prices of their games. So prices could remain high on the Epic store and if a developer was to put their game on sale for a limited time, you would be hard pressed to know about it as it seems Epic wont be publicising this like Steam does.

From a business pov it kind of makes sense to put your game on a timed exclusive with Epic, especially if they pay you the balance of any pre-calculated lost sales.

Here is why. Day 1 buyers will buy your game from whatever store because they wants it. You then get 88% of revenue. Games have a shelf life of 13 weeks (unless you are GTA, FIFA or COD) and then it hits "catalogue". In this time frame you begin to discount between 10% - 30% until week 52. After that you hit deep catalogue when you start to discount between 30% - 70% depending upon the game. By that time the game will now be open to Steam from which they get a double boost, the Steam gamers who waited it for it to come to the platform and the advantage of the sale. You kind of maximized your revenue potential.

So I can see the merits of taking Epic's deal even if it sucks.

From Eurogamer interview:
In terms of making the decision easier for bigger companies - how aggressively have you been pursuing these exclusives, how much money does it cost to secure these big deals with Ubisoft?

Tim Sweeney: In all cases, developers were really genuinely excited about the revenue split and what that meant for their economics, also their control over their store page and the fact that no other games would be on their pages - it'd be a much more direct relationship with their customers. Launching the store, we've helped developers in various ways, such as making minimum revenue guarantees - so that Epic is taking the risk as to whether they'd perform better or perform worse than they would on Steam. These are all the result of long-running discussions between Epic and our partners. But we've been investing very heavily in it - and we're very encouraged with the results that we've seen, and are very encouraged about the future.

The emphasis is now on Valve. They can do nothing but that is not working out for them so far.

Until he addresses the substantial security concerns, it's a moot point for me.

So much good press about the EGS this week, some sites have mutliple stories quoting from the same interview. I've yet to see anyone really grill him about the security and privacy concerns, it's all softball stuff but I guess that's par for the course for games journalists, a lot of stories are little more than PR puff pieces.

it is a fucking disgrace. I am beginning to think he pre-screened the questions. Yet another CEO happy to take millions in dollars in salary but scared of his own shadow. Either that or games journalists should really drop the title journalist and go with fan-boy.

I think calling a 20 minute video a "summary" is pushing it a little.

Not listened to Sterling, but my take on it is that the Epic store is better for publishers, but worse for the customer. Unless that is addressed, I wouldn't touch it with yours.

What if everyone got together and made a universal DRM solution. A lightweight program that only handled DRM for installed games and every store tapped into it. Buy from whatever store you fancy but not need shitty ugly launchers.

Won’t happen in a world of “social features” but hay ho!
