Baldur's Gate 3: developed by Larian Studios

Post by DjchunKfunK » Thu May 30, 2019 7:18 pm

Big news leaked out today that Larian Studio might be working on Baldur's Gate 3. They put the following up on their site.

http://larian.com/

Some people did some digging around in the code/metadata for the website and found references to DnD and Baldur's Gate 3. Consequently Schreier said that people were confirming it to him second hand and Brian Fargo, who had mentioned that he knew which studio was working on Baldur's Gate 3, posted this on Twitter.

So it looks like we are finally getting a Baldur's Gate 3 and from one of the best RPG developers around. Time to get excited.

If true it's in the best possible hands. Loving my slow play through of the second Divinity game here :)

I saw this earlier and assumed (wrongly it would seem) that it was Original Sin 3.

I've never been more happy being wrong. :D

Can only echo Lee's post, DOS2 was a stunning RPG, I'm sure they'll make an outstanding effort at the franchise. Better them than Beamdog's, whose remastered editions I just haven't really enjoyed tbh.

I hope it’s Divinity style combat because the one thing I’ve never got on with in any IE game is the real time with pause aspect. It almost certainly won’t though because everyone would be up in arms.

Actually this just makes me sad OS3 is probably a long long long way away.

Larian posted their first "community update" (it's really more of a comedy skit) for the game.

I'm actually quite excited for this. The forum D&D game has gotten me invested in the D&D setting, and it'll be nice to have a brand new game that isn't hampered by a 20 year old interface and mechanics (I know the enhanced editions brought some quality of life tweaks, but they still don't feel in any way modern).

After DOS2 you could argue that for an isometric RPG it couldn't be in a safer pair of hands, or at least on a par with Obsidian.

Colour me very interested.

Yay, convert! :)

BG3... I'm not sure how I feel. The BG games are still my favourite games of all time, and I can't imagine anything taking that name and living up to my (admittedly unreasonable) expectations. The Bhaal story was neatly tied up at the end of Throne of Bhaal, so any follow-up story is going to face a challenge to be satisfying or compelling. And Larian would not be my first choice of studio to take BG on, as I'm not a huge fan of the Original Sin games, mostly down to their approach to world exploration which seems to lack a sense of scale or place. It's not that I don't think they can do BG justice, it's more that I'm worried we'll get Original Sin 3 with a D&D skin, which would be wrong for BG.

Onto the positives, I'm more than ready for a CRPG that makes proper use of the D&D 5E rules, hopefully with turn-based combat (which is where Larian shine). Sword Coast Legends is the only other game that's made any use of the ruleset, but it was a cut-down, mangled shadow of 5E. If BG3 adapts 5E in the way that BG1 and 2 adapted 2.5E, I'll be thrilled. I'm also happy that they're working closely with WotC to tie the story directly into the upcoming Descent into Avernus adventure, which gives me some hope that the story will be good (putting aside any links to the Bhaal story).

I think the best way for me to think of BG3 is not as a BG game, but as a completely new RPG using 5E rules. That excites me, whereas the idea of there being a BG3 worries me.

A large part of the Baldur's gate series for me was the world itself so if Larian can bring that to life in a similar way to Bioware then I'll be happy. I think they told a better story in OS 2 than in 1 so they are obviously improving in that area so I have some confidence that they can continue to improve and get that right and they are obviously great at making RPG combat.
