Adventures in 3D design and printing

Re: Adventures in 3D printing
My next project is, err, a little more ambitious.
Re: Adventures in 3D printing
Ambitious, and sorta done.
The finish leaves a lot to be desired; I decided I'd give sanding with fine sandpaper a go, and while I've taken off the majority of the support structure nubs, it's left him permanently dusty in places. I'm going to paint him when I dig my airbrush out to paint the X-Wing miniatures. He's designed entirely from scratch, though there's a very obvious Futurama influence. I knew when designing him that the aerial was going to be problematic, and honestly I'm amazed I managed to get it out of the printing supports intact. It'll almost certainly break at some point, but then I didn't exactly design this thing as a toy.
I'm pretty proud of this if I'm honest.

Re: Adventures in 3D design and printing
You should be; it looks great!
Re: Adventures in 3D design and printing
That is so cool.
And I have a request. From a guy I work with who is a very nice fella and got very excited when I mentioned this...
Can you make him a tesseract? I thought it was just a metal band, but apparently it is kinda a cube within a cube, and probably rather easy to make. Happy to pay for materials, postage and whatnot.

Re: Adventures in 3D design and printing
I dare say it'd be possible, but what's the reason for the request?
Re: Adventures in 3D design and printing
An actual tesseract is a four dimensional cube, so I'd be very impressed if anyone manages to 3D print one in the next century.
Re: Adventures in 3D design and printing
A tesseract is usually represented in three dimensional terms as a cube within a cube, with each inner vertex linked to the corresponding vertex on the outer cube.
Re: Adventures in 3D design and printing
But he didn't ask for a representation of a tesseract, he wants the real thing. Get working you.
Re: Adventures in 3D design and printing
In the nicest possible way, he is a massive tech nerd. As soon as I mentioned what you were doing He started to go nuts about how if he had one he could realise his wish to own a representation of a tesseract (no need for anything 4D )
I figured if he was that excited about it, least I could do was enquire

Ah yes, the good old "asking for a 'friend'".

Haha I didn't even know what the bloody thing was

Re: Adventures in 3D design and printing
Give him a handful of matchsticks, lollipop sticks and glue and tell him it came flatpacked.
A man who could tell more truth and eat fewer pies.
Re: Adventures in 3D design and printing
Just to let you know, I did actually try to model the tesseract at the weekend, but another project which needed doing this week has taken precedence. I think the biggest problem would be packaging the thing to survive the trip. I have no idea how fragile this stuff is.
Re: Adventures in 3D design and printing
If nothing else this may teach you what is (or is not) sufficient precaution
