I am on She-Ra Season 4. Still hoping He-Man will show up one of these days...

Re: Good TV (aka, the TV series spamthread), the second series
As soon as I realised that Northmen/Norsemen was a comedy I was instantly not interested.
I am still annoyed that Vikings took a fascinating period of history and reduced it to one raid in England followed by wafty faux-mysticism, googly-eyed Ragnar Lothbrok making nonsensical decisions ending up in continual defeat, and basically abandoning almost all the history books tell of his life and death.
I got so sick of it that even once they killed him (incorrectly) and the story switched to his son Ivar, I couldn't be bothered to continue.
Thankfully The Last Kingdom is holding true-ish to the books.

I'm still following Vikings, but think it peaked at the end of Season 3 with the invasion of Paris and the spiritual redemption and death of Athelstan. The final three seasons (including the one to come this week) appear to be a slow descent into ever-increasing nihilistic drudgery.

The first episode wasn't great. I actually didn't really enjoy the show all that much until Gabriel Byrne left.

Re: Good TV (aka, the TV series spamthread), the second series
Purely because it is a period of history that interests me and that hasn't really been well covered by any TV show. It could well be really funny but I would still be sat wanting it to cover subject matter that it isn't going to.
If that makes sense.

I think you might be pleasantly surprised on that score. There are clearly elements of Viking culture and practices they include while still poking fun at it, it's a Norwegian production (they filmed two versions of every episode, one in their own language and one in English) and they know their subject matter, and the costumes, sets and locations etc all ring true. It may not be 100% historically accurate, but I say it's in the same spirit as Blackadder in that you can learn about periods of English history from it even though it's primarily comedic.

I may give it a watch then - I found it and thought I had found something that might expunge the bad taste that Vikings left in my mouth, then realised it was a comedy and immediately turned it off.

I don't like comedy, except incidental comedy -- i.e. well-written witty dialogue -- but I don't like things that set out to be comedic.

Re: Good TV (aka, the TV series spamthread), the second series
So, Vikings season 6.
I watched the first episode last night. Looks like more of the same stuff since the general change of direction at season 4. More characters moping about, unsure what their purpose is, spouting half-baked philosophical musings while, generally speaking, nothing actually happens. A new character is introduced, who had the potential to be somebody really interesting, but - surprise! - he isn't (though I am sure the writers think he is).
Will I keep watching it, though? Yes I will.

I really want to watch it, but I really don’t want to face the ad-riddled hellscape that is 4OD, or All4, or 4MinsOfAdsEveryOtherSecond, or whatever they’re calling it now.
