So is there some kind of sea change happening with game graphics that's going to need £1000 GPUs from now on?

I spent about 15 years spending £120 on a mid-range GPU every 3 or 4 years and played the latest games at only a notch or 2 below full whack. GPU's costing £300+ used to be pushing the boat out.
Yeah, same. I'm running a 6gb 1060 right now and haven't really noticed any need to upgrade in the near-future, I must say.

I'll probably have to invest in a new system in a year or two (money being tight I'm trying to eke this one out for as long as possible), so that may be the time to see how much the new generation of cards is going for.

£1100 for a 2080TI. I don't feel so bad about having just bought a £600 1080TI now.
Same here with my recent 1070, anything over 500 quid is way too much to justify, especially to my other half

I think it's a mix between Nvidia having market dominance and being greedy with it alongside the cryptocurrency mining craze that pushed all of the GPU prices up significantly, even though the mining has tapered off the prices have never really come back down. Don't forget that the pound is still down by a fair amount on the dollar than four or five years ago, so that pushed prices up too.

The pricing was always fine up until the end of the 9x0 series, my 980 Ti was only about £500 and it was the top card available at the time outside of the monster Titan series. The equivalent brand of card (MSI Gamer Edition) for a 1080 Ti is £859.99. :|

These cards are a massive jump over previous ones. The 2080ti is light years ahead of the 1080ti, the 2070 is around the same power as the Titan. If you paid £600 for a 1080ti then around £750 for a 2070 is a bargain, relatively. Rumours that the 2050 will be as powerful as a 1080ti, but I wouldn't expect 2060s and 2050s till later in the year.

EDIT: RTX 2070 has a MSRP of £569 and the RTX 2080 of £749.

And when anything at 1080P needs that kind of grunt I'll think about upgrading :)
Unless you're running at 4K this seems like a hugely pointless upgrade.

That totally depends on what your current card is.

They've missed out the "no" option for "Do you have a soul" though, I guess that only applies to whoever prices these buggers.

I am now very happy to have bought my 1070Ti for £420 as it will not be upgraded for a very long time looking at those prices.

Something worth noting that I didn't, the 6 times faster than a 1080 that Nvidia is touting is implied to be on ray tracing, not overall performance.

Will definitely be interesting to see benchmarks, which I guess we'll get at the end of the month?

It's a bit suspicious they didn't mention old fashioned performance stuff during the conference, but spent loads of time showing still screenshots of cars.

A couple of tech forums I've browsed weren't especially impressed with the reveal. They all reckon that the ray tracing stuff is being pushed heavily because clock-wise the new cards won't be a significant jump over the past generation, and that the ray tracing power is kind of irrelevant because it'll be a few years before a lot of games make proper use of it anyway. Apparently these cards are being seen as more of a stopgap ready for the big 7m chip refresh that's going to take place next year.

Again, one of those things that we won't know until someone breaks NDA, or the review ban gets lifted :)
But then again, will this be another Nvidia special "Benchmark these games at these settings plzkthnx" job.

I certainly wouldn't put it past them, the shady scamps ;)

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digi ... benchmarks

IT'S ONE BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!11111
Thanks Nvidia!

I have also heard rumours of non ray-tracing game performance being 10-15% better than the previous cards.
For a 40-50% price hike.
Pinch of salt etc etc, but this is looking like a weak release once you're through the ray tracing marketing bullshit (the latest on-boarder being that card killer Fortnite ¬¬ ).
