I feel like this thread has done the very thing that Maturin was warning about on the first page.

We need separate threads for 'favourite classics' and 'favourite trash you just love', because I love Under Siege too but I don't think I'd ever put it in this thread. -_-
I never said it was a favourite, just it's part of my early film history. The thread is safe :)

Under Siege does not belong in the same thread as Casablanca or A Matter Of Life and Death. ¬_¬

"Who the fuck are you!?"

I feel like we need an 80s action movie thread (allowing for films from other decades that embody the spirit of 80s action) where we can discuss the glory days of Schwarzenegger, Stallone et al with their steroid-infused Reaganite sensibilities and infinite ammo. Commando is one of my favourite films of all time, but in no way would I ever argue in favour of its cinematic expertise.

I laughed out loud at this.

Some guys talk about making new threads. Others make new threads. Which are you going to be? ¬_¬

In no particular order:

Alien
The Thing
The Last Of The Mohicans
Jurassic Park
Leon
Labyrinth
I got my girls to watch Labyrinth for the first time a couple of months ago as I thought they were about the right age (5 and 7). To my delight they really enjoyed it, finding it just as thrilling and in parts somewhat terrifying as I did when watching it at their age.

I'm considering The Dark Crystal too at some point, although given that the appearance of the Skexis is a bit unnerving I might leave it another year or two.
Yeah, The Dark Crystal is definitely, well, a lot darker ;). I almost included it instead of Labyrinth - not that it has to be one or the other - but when I last watched both I just felt that Labyrinth held up as being a bit of a stronger film overall. Still, The Dark Crystal will always have a special place in my mind.

I have never watched The Goonies.

One for the list I think, as well as probably a notable omission from my growing up. It is one of those films where, when people mention it, I just smile and nod because of so many "You WHAT?" responses to honesty :)

I only watched The Goonies for the first time about five years ago. It's fun, but I think maybe it's one you had to grow up with to properly appreciate.

I can see that. It was only when recently watching it with my kids, or starting to, I realised how slow it is to get going in the beginning, and how free-form and hard to follow a lot of the dialogue is between the kids.

It's a strange thing - there are films I watched and loved at a very young age that I clearly can't have followed to any significant degree, but I loved them nonetheless. It's surprising how well kids can follow the gist of a well-made film from things like the music and tone of the characters, even if the detail is lost on them.

It just occurred to me that another favourite of mine, right up there at the top with Gladiator, is Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (2006) I love absolutely everything about it.

I too have never seen The Goonies, nor The Usual Suspects. I've actually got a list of things I should watch, but it only ever gets bigger…

I subjected the other half to a 'gangster/heist/mafioso' movie marathon not long ago to educate her as to why they are some of the best movies ever made; it ran through all the classics from Scarface, Godfather, Heat, Departed, Good Fellas etc.

We watched The Usual Suspects as part of that stint. It's been a few years since I'd last seen it and boy does it still stand up as a fantastic movie.

Had a similar experience not so long ago with the aforementioned Goodfellas. Still such a great film.
