World Cup 2022

Post by Achtung Englander » Mon Nov 21, 2022 10:25 am

Qatar v Ecuador
0 2

Well that was $200B well spent

They made World Cup history. The first host to lose an opening match.

It feels so weird. There's actually a World Cup going on right now but you wouldn't know it.

Only just realised England are playing in a few hours.

It feels like a shocking failure of sportwashing, doesn't it. Qatar seemingly bribed their way to getting this in the first place, and all that's happening is discussion of the stuff they're trying to sweep under the carpet. We'll see how long that continues for after the first England game this evening, but the BBC got a rare win with me for refusing to show the opening ceremony in favour of a discussion of Qatar's failings.

Yes the fact they went full on was a nice surprise.

Still - the bribes have been paid and Qatar and FIFA has lost a lot of credibility. I am here for the football.

The Netflix documentary on FIFA corruption is very good. I just bough the book Red Card by Ken Bensinger. What a sham of an organisation.

The credibility is kind of irrelevant when everybody is still going to tune in anyway. Watching it is implicit support of their actions.

It wouldn't be that hard to show the minimum amount of solidarity by boycotting the matches this year but even that seems to be too much of a stretch for most people.

Not me, I won't be watching or following a minute of it, personally. A bunch of people I know through following football are doing the same too.

I feel the same as I do about F1: fuck them both. Not interested in the Middle East papering over the blood with their money.

Fuck the World Cup. They’re not even trying to hide the corruption anymore. First one since 86 that I won’t be watching. Fuck all those spineless millionaire fucks that won’t wear an armband too.
