The Watch

Post by DjchunKfunK » Fri Jan 17, 2020 2:33 pm

First shots have been released of BBC America's adaptation of the Terry Pratchett series and it looks awful. No mention of Nobbs or Colon, Angua appears to be the world's smallest warewolf and is the person training Carrot, not the other way around. Cheery as a dwarf is taller than Angua and Vimes just looks totally wrong.

"Inspired by" = "Yeah, we'll use some characters from the books but otherwise we can do what we like. It'll sell on STP's name alone"

I must admit, I don't immediately think 'Discworld' when I see those photos.

But, who knows. I thought The Witcher would be shit when the early Henry Cavill and filming photos came out, and that ended up being one of my favourite shows of last year.

I think the difference there is that the original books don't have a style that you need to replicate and they didn't change the characters. Pratchett's literary style is hard to match on screen and they have made huge changes to the cast, at which point you have to ask, if you are going to make such big changes why bother making the show in the first place? Just come up with your own universe.

I've yet to see an adaption of a Discworld book I didn't hate, it does not translate well to the screen.

Forgive me for necroing this old thread but someone posted on reddit today and it summarises how I feel about the show so well that I felt the need to share it. It's a bit long but there are tldr's throughout

I've actually been reading the Watch series recently, in fact other than a brief foray into the Wizards series I've been reading them one after another, and I'd been considering seeing whether this was worth watching. I don't want to read a full series review for risk of spoilers for the books, but I'm guessing that this didn't fare well? I went and found those first look shots from another site, and with the exception of Cheery (who does indeed look too large to be a dwarf) I didn't actually hate them.

Didn't even realise this had aired.

Btw... the above is how I also feel about The Witcher on Netflix

I saw that after I posted and had a wry chuckle. To clarify, S1 is still very good, but then S2 shat the bed in grand style ( and it seems like Cavill agrees)...

Snowy in the Witcher thread wrote:If you are making a show based upon a series of books (and probably influenced by the characters in the games too), then you need to base the fucking show on what has proven so fucking popular rather than think a bunch of wannabe writers can do better which they inevitably can't. And yes Wheel of Time and Rings of Power I am looking at you.
Just add in Discworld to my earlier comment and we are good to go...

I stopped watching Rings of Power after about 4 episodes. None of it made any sense in relation to Tolkien's work. They ended up making a random poorly-written fantasy show and seemingly plastered some names from the books onto the characters.

Just don't understand it, they had this almighty opportunity presented to them with a limitless budget and they produced this.

I read that Tolkien's estate basically banned them from using most of the material in Silmarillion, so maybe they didn't have much choice. But then, for me, the questions remains: why bother?

I wonder if it's partially an ego thing. I get the feeling creative types don't want to just reproduce someone else's work, they have to either put their own spin on things or at least create something of their own within the parameters set in another's work.
