A new Opeth album is always cause for a happy Snowy. They have just announced The Last Will and Testament, to be released later this year.

Re: \m/ Metal \m/
Nice. Sounds like an interesting mixture of their more recent classic prog sound with added growls.
Re: \m/ Metal \m/
Just back from Bloodstock, knackered.
Saw Opeth on the main stage...not my scene. Too clever and technical Probably OK to listen to at home but I want to go hard at a festival.

Ambient noises with distant/quiet/whispered vocals.
Complete mute for 0.5-1 seconds
Scream, usually the title of the song.
Blastbeats
SYL sounding vocals for verse.
Cheesy Evanesance chorus.
Complete mute for 0.5-1 seconds
Don’t scream this time, just bring blastbeats back
Verse
Chorus
Half tempo, more chuggy verse
Vocal Only chorus for 0.5-1 lines
Half tempo but slightly more heavy chorus
End to taste.
Is this what makes metalcore?

Given I had absolutely no clue where you were going with this, absolutely not, no.
What band were you even describing?!
Re: \m/ Metal \m/
I am curious too
I enjoyed this mightily:

Re: \m/ Metal \m/
I have no idea
I was talking with a guy about the new Poppy track (which mostly kind of fits that formula). He said it was "metalcore as fuck". I said "what even is metalcore?". He proceeded to play a bunch of tracks that were all near identical in structure. I think most of the bands had stupid modern band names like... Smelling Emotional Snow or whatever. I know I shouldn't but I tend to skip past bands where it would be a toss up if it were a band name or a Dillinger Escape Plan track. The tracks he played were fine, the heavy bits were decent the melodic bits a bit weak, all very hyper produced. Is metalcore used these days as like a trendy metal moniker like nu metal was? I barely heard the term much at all till recentish times where its all metalcore this and metalcore that.
Dude had a tattoo of one of the bands so you'd think I'd at least remember that one
Also thats probably the best the Trooper has ever sounded

I'm gonna stop right there, sounds like your friend has no idea what they're talking about.Alan wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 11:00 amI was talking with a guy about the new Poppy track (which mostly kind of fits that formula). He said it was "metalcore as fuck".

In 2023, she released her fifth studio album, Zig, which was described as dark pop. Her sixth album, Negative Spaces, is set to be released in late 2024."
(Edit: listened to it, I get the comparison. It's not a very good song to my ear though. Production seems lacking, too.)

I think you're just showing your age, either in actual years or detachment from this area of music. Is metalcore used these days as like a trendy metal moniker like nu metal was? I barely heard the term much at all till recentish times where its all metalcore this and metalcore that.
I tend to think of Killswitch Engage as the go-to example of Metalcore, but to try not to lean only on my preferences I asked Wikipedia…
Yeah, that seems fair enough. This led to bands such as Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, Trivium, As I Lay Dying, Bullet for My Valentine, and Parkway Drive finding mainstream popularity.
All these example are pretty "old", 14-17 years now:
Killswitch Engage – My Curse
Killswitch Engage - My Last Serenade
Bullet For My Valentine - Hand Of Blood (Some of Wales' finest, along with Funeral for a Friend (who are not metalcore, but they are good IMO))
Re: \m/ Metal \m/
I quite like Poppy because she drastically jumps genres with every album from synth pop to metal. Its fun seeing where she'll end up next.
I was 100% on board with that but you reminded me of bands like Bullet For My Valentine which a young me also thought was cringe as fuck so young man also shouted at said cloud. -_-Old man shouts at cloud?I think most of the bands had stupid modern band names
You know it might be detachment. Ive never liked BfmV and Killswitch while being wholly inoffensive and alright live I'd never choose to put them on. Maybe I have selective amnesia. :p. I was heavy into math for a hot minute which is apparently a subgenre of metalcore.... who knew?I think you're just showing your age, either in actual years or detachment from this area of music.
Wiki also says Jinjer are metal core which I don't think fits at all but mehhh. Ive wasted enough of both our times on shit that does not matter in the least!I asked Wikipedia…This led to bands such as Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, Trivium, As I Lay Dying, Bullet for My Valentine, and Parkway Drive finding mainstream popularity.

Re: \m/ Metal \m/
Hah, yeah that's fair. Daft name, but they've got some smashing tunes.
Math...core? Don't recognise any of the names in that wiki article except Dillinger Escape Plan, who I saw live once which instantly made me avoid them from then on.You know it might be detachment. I don't even remember who they were supporting!
My point previously was that your potted description of Metalcore didn't match any BfmV or KsE vibes I could think of, but seeing as we're coming from opposite sides we'll probably never agree on a description anyway.
Never listened to them, think their singer showed up at a Spiritbox show recently? (I really like Spiritbox, seeing them next year.) "JINJER is a Ukrainian 4-piece progressive metal band with strong hardcore and groove metal origins."Wiki also says Jinjer are metal core which I don't think fits at all but mehhh.
Getting the prog vibes from a few songs, sure. Listening to Rogue now, I don't think it's my jam. Not sure why.
Well, yes, but also isn't that what a forum's for?Ive wasted enough of both our times on shit that does not matter in the least!
Re: \m/ Metal \m/
I have long since given up on the endless genre pigeonholes that music (particularly metal it seems) invents.
Although having written that sentence I realise that I do use these, but as signposts steering me away from things I won't have any time for.
- Melodeath, death metal, black metal, thrash metal, prog metal, folk metal, blackgaze, viking metal - why come and play your goodness to me, see if I enjoy your offerings.
- Mathcore, drone metal, noise metal, goregrind, (almost all) slam, power metal, christian metal - there's the door, kindly avail yourselves of it.
Not sure whether I am a cloud-shouter or not now!

Re: \m/ Metal \m/
In other news I am absolutely loving the latest from Blood Incantation. Genres? Why certainly, I would say it is sci-fi prog death metal
It certainly is nuts though, it whips from blast beats and some absolutely epic guitar work into chilled synth passages that wouldn't be out of place in a Pink Floyd record and back again. Nice growled and clean vocals too.
