A new Opeth album is always cause for a happy Snowy. They have just announced The Last Will and Testament, to be released later this year.

Teaser song - with growled vocals again!

Nice. Sounds like an interesting mixture of their more recent classic prog sound with added growls.

Just back from Bloodstock, knackered.

Saw Opeth on the main stage...not my scene. Too clever and technical :) Probably OK to listen to at home but I want to go hard at a festival.

Ambient noises with distant/quiet/whispered vocals.
Complete mute for 0.5-1 seconds
Scream, usually the title of the song.
Blastbeats
SYL sounding vocals for verse.
Cheesy Evanesance chorus.
Complete mute for 0.5-1 seconds
Don’t scream this time, just bring blastbeats back
Verse
Chorus
Half tempo, more chuggy verse
Vocal Only chorus for 0.5-1 lines
Half tempo but slightly more heavy chorus
End to taste.

Is this what makes metalcore?

Given I had absolutely no clue where you were going with this, absolutely not, no.

What band were you even describing?!

I have no idea

I was talking with a guy about the new Poppy track (which mostly kind of fits that formula). He said it was "metalcore as fuck". I said "what even is metalcore?". He proceeded to play a bunch of tracks that were all near identical in structure. I think most of the bands had stupid modern band names like... Smelling Emotional Snow or whatever. I know I shouldn't but I tend to skip past bands where it would be a toss up if it were a band name or a Dillinger Escape Plan track. The tracks he played were fine, the heavy bits were decent the melodic bits a bit weak, all very hyper produced. Is metalcore used these days as like a trendy metal moniker like nu metal was? I barely heard the term much at all till recentish times where its all metalcore this and metalcore that. :-k

Dude had a tattoo of one of the bands so you'd think I'd at least remember that one

Also thats probably the best the Trooper has ever sounded :D

I'm gonna stop right there, sounds like your friend has no idea what they're talking about.

In 2023, she released her fifth studio album, Zig, which was described as dark pop. Her sixth album, Negative Spaces, is set to be released in late 2024."

(Edit: listened to it, I get the comparison. It's not a very good song to my ear though. Production seems lacking, too.)

I think you're just showing your age, either in actual years or detachment from this area of music.

I tend to think of Killswitch Engage as the go-to example of Metalcore, but to try not to lean only on my preferences I asked Wikipedia
This led to bands such as Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, Trivium, As I Lay Dying, Bullet for My Valentine, and Parkway Drive finding mainstream popularity.
Yeah, that seems fair enough.

All these example are pretty "old", 14-17 years now:

Killswitch Engage – My Curse

Killswitch Engage - My Last Serenade

Bullet For My Valentine - Hand Of Blood (Some of Wales' finest, along with Funeral for a Friend (who are not metalcore, but they are good IMO))
