Sounds like the new cards will start rolling out relatively soon, with the 2080 coming out first. There are lots of technical details about the number of cores etc. and ray tracing that I don't really think matter that much right now. All that matters to me are frame rates. Apparently there could be more info on 20th August at Gamescom.

Personally, I've been using a 980Ti for the past 2/3 years that has been serving me well. Not sure what it would take for me to upgrade TBH, don't really have problems running stuff at high settings/1440p with decent FPS.

Likewise with the 980Ti. It's more than enough for my 1080p monitor that I can't bear to get rid of because I love the IPS beauty of it. My GPU is only 3 years old while my CPU is pushing 6 now, so that'll be the next thing I upgrade when I consider it not to be keeping up anymore. I reckon I can get another two years out of this setup as a minimum though.

Is your monitor 144Hz (or higher)? If not, even your 980Ti is wasted on it

I use a 1440p 144Hz G-Sync monitor. The 980Ti is definitely struggling to get above 100FPS in some more recent games, which means I am a little tempted, but still...

Nope, I'm an old school 1080p60 guy. Though to be fair, the CPU would stop me making use of a 144Hz screen anyway as when I unlock the framerate and keep an eye on it just out of curiosity a lot of top end titles only usually hang around the 90fps mark, which isn't such a significant boost above 60 that I'm bothered about having a higher refresh rate. I've started to notice on the very latest titles that average FPS has dropped to the 60-80 mark too.

In a couple of years I'll go all in and get a new mobo, CPU, memory and snazzy monitor. My PS4 Pro can do 4k and I haven't really seen enough of a difference to be tempted above 1080p on PC for the time being.

I'm personally in the camp that thinks a 27 inch monitor is perfect size for PC use, and 1440p at that size is a bit higher DPI than a 24 inch 1080p monitor. I definitely noticed the difference when I started using it. TBH though, I'd prioritise the 144Hz aspect, as it is suuuuper noticeable when compared to 60Hz.

These are bad days to be buying GFX cards anyways, the miners have pushed the priceses up dramatically the last few years. I bought my 1070 on release and it was cheaper to get one then than it is now.

I forget exactly what model it is, but it's an i5 2012 model. I'm running it on a 23" IPS 1080p monitor which I adore because of how vibrant it is. I only picked up the 980Ti because the higher end ATI card that I bought when I built the rig was starting to struggle on big AAA games, since then the Nvidia card has destroyed pretty much everything I've thrown at it. Eventually I'll buy a 27" IPS G-Sync beast, but I'm more than happy with how things hold up for the time being.

I just recently upgraded everything, monitor included, and tend to "only" hover around 90FPS on Rainbow 6 Siege and Overwatch using a 1070 to drive a 165Hz 1440p monitor at fairly high (not full) settings. I can't imagine a 980Ti would do particularly well given the same parameters!

Previously I was rocking a 24" 1920x1200 monitor which was the sweet spot for resolution, IMO. I'm gutted that 16:10 aspect ratio lost the war to 16:9. Still, 27" running at 2650x1440 is a really nice size/resolution combination – the correct combination, even! I used to have a 27" 1080p monitor at my old job and it was horrible – even with it at a sensible distance you could see the damn pixels. Ugh!

The latest models are pushing £800 for the Ti variants. That is just unreal, I paid about £500 for mine a couple of years ago.

I think a 980Ti and 1070 are actually very close when it comes to performance, the newer chips just edge out the 980 ever so slightly. When it comes down to choosing between higher framerate or resolution I'd always go for the former though, that's why I'm happy to stay on 1080p for a while longer.

A 980Ti is roughly equivalent to a 1070 (maybe very slightly worse, but almost the same frame rates).

I'm surprised they're that close, given there's so few models above the 1070. Was the 980Ti top of its game? The 10xx series runs 1070, 1070Ti, 1080, 1080Ti, right? If the 980Ti is similar enough to the 1070 to make little difference, then what's the point of the 10xx series at all?
