Listening to an Audible podcast called The Butterfly Effect which is an exploration of the effects that PornHub has had on the porn industry.
Don't walk away, come back. This is some proper Louis Theroux shit and it's hard to not listen to. The first episode deals with the tech side, and the disconnect between ethics and business is unbelievable. But yes do be warned, headphones early.

The follow up, The Last Days Of August is pretty good too.

Re: Podcasts
Been listening to It Could Happen Here on acast, where the possibility of a 2nd American Civil War could happen. Since Trump has been elected the white supremacists, religious right and general mix of right-wing scum have become more vocal and active. It's actually pretty terrifying how plausible it all sounds.
Re: Podcasts
I've just finished The Butterfly Effect and whilst it's certainly interesting and there's some good stuff in there, I think it goes way too far in trying to ascribe the changes to the porn industry so singularly to Pornhub and particularly the effect it had on some porn producers. Is Pornhub a fantastic company of kittens and rainbows? No. Did it impact the porn industry to the detriment of some? Yes. But it wasn't all Pornhub's fault and despite the Pol Pot analogue (which doesn't really work at all) the liberalisation of porn was inevitable, as evidenced by the fact all the other tube sites existed/exist. Plenty of porn companies survive and do very well still.
I didn't have much sympathy for the guy who complains that his plans to get rich and retire before 50 were thwarted - welcome to normal life, where people don't get to retire early.
As with any creative industry, there are some stars who do very well for a long time and make a boat load of money and there are plenty of aspiring young people who think they will make it big and don't. If anything, the likes of Pornhub (and ManyVids, JustForFans, AdultWork, OnlyFans... the list goes on) have made it much easier for people to get into that line of work, both professionally and in an amateur capacity and models are still paid fairly well for what they do, even at the start of their career.
It just feels very much like it took one specific perspective on a broad industry and implied that it was a valid objective view of the whole, which it really isn't.
