Here's the shopping list:

Note: Wizards are not allowed to wear armour and the largest weapon they may buy is a dagger.

Armour
Shield - 10 Gold
Leather Armour - 25 Gold
Chain Armour - 50 Gold
Plate Armour - 200 Gold
Mithril Armour - 400 Gold

Weapons
Dagger - 10 Gold
Spear - 10 Gold
Sword, Axe or Warhammer - 25 Gold
Two-Handed Sword, Two-Handed Axe or Halberd - 50 Gold
Short Bow + 6 Arrows - 20 Gold
Regular Bow + 6 Arrows - 25 Gold
Longbow + 6 Arrows - 50 Gold
Crossbow + 6 Bolts - 40 Gold
6 Arrows - 10 Gold
6 Bolts - 10 Gold

Equipment*
10' Rope - 5 Gold
10x Iron Spikes - 10 Gold
Flask of Greek Fire - 25 Gold
Bottle of Rat Poison - 25 Gold
Screech Bug - 25 Gold

*This stuff is used for getting out of various traps
What are the rules on switching between sword/shield and bow? It's been so long since I played it.

It's just with my low toughness I'm wondering whether I should use a bow occasionally to avoid certain enemies hand-to-hand.

Also, Sly, you need to choose which Wind of Magic you want to tap into.

You may use:

1. Wind of Hysh, Lore of Light
2. Wind of Aqshy, Lore of Fire
3. Wind of Ghyran, Lore of Life
4. Wind of Shyish, Lore of Death
Thanks Doug - quick question on the weapons, so does that mean I can't buy any of the ranged weapon options (short bows etc)?

And what is the screech bug used for, is that for distracting enemies?

If you're attacking an enemy at a distance, you may use a bow or throwing weapon (e.g. dagger). If you're attacking in hand-to-hand, you use a sword & shield if you have them. No fancy rules about "switching" -- we just assume you put your sword and shield away and get out your bow to shoot, and vice versa to engage in hand-to-hand.

A screech bug is basically bat repellent, if you happen to walk into a room full of bats.

Ah, shall pick up one of those then. And the question about weapons, is it basically pointless for me to buy anything ranged?

I'll pick the Wind of Fire.

You may buy as many daggers as you like. You can throw them.

Doug, with my 70 gold I would like to buy:

Leather armour 25
Shield 10
Sword 25

Leaving me 10 gold.

Basically, with my high weapon skill and low toughness I've decided I need to go defensive. I actually happen to know that the leather armour and shield will reduce my bow skill, but I'll just stick to melee to start with.

Cheers.

I shall go with:

2 x dagger
Rope
Greek Fire flask
Screech bug

Using Wind of Fire

Leaving me 5g remaining.

Oh, Sly -- something else you should know, before you commit to that shopping list.

You begin the game with four spells, and each spell you have requires a unique component to cast the spell (you start with one of each component). Once you use that component up, you can no longer cast the spell. BUT, you can buy replacement components before you begin the quest. Each component costs 25 Gold.

Your four Fire Spells are:

1. Dragon Armour (Component: Red Dragon Dust)
Add magical armour to yourself or an adjacent character.

2. Flames of Death (Component: Fire Dust)
Massive fireball!

3. Open Window (Component: Silver Key)
See into an unexplored area.

4. Flames of the Phoenix (Component: Phoenix Feather)
Heal yourself or a friend.

Do you want to buy a dagger, just in case? You can throw it!

Oh wow, yeah, that does change things somewhat

Scrub that list, then, I'll go with backup components for the fireball and healing spells for a total of 50g.

Then I'll also buy a couple of daggers (20g) and a rope (5g).

Does that sound reasonable?

Hmm. Doug, are we doing a campaign type thing here, with characters moving from dungeon to dungeon, leveling up?

Because I might leave myself a little gold for kitting up next time and skip the daggers for now.

We're not doing a campaign with a massive story, we're doing a small quest. If it all goes well and people are still having fun by the end, we may do another one and it may relate to the first in plot. But, I do not have anything complex in mind.

One more thing. Sorry about this, the rules for AHQ (in typical GW 80s style) are actually simple, yet buried within so many walls of text it's hard to find them.

Apparently, Elf Wizards only get three free spell components (you choose which ones), not four like humans do, so although you know all four of those spells, you only get to use three to start with, unless you buy the fourth component.

Oh in that case I'll buy a dagger for 10 then, using up my full allowance.

Ok, in that case I'll buy the component for the fourth spell (25g) so I have one of each, and spend another 25g buying a backup healing spell.

Then as before 2x daggers and 1x rope with 5g left over. If you can have multiples of equipment then I'll buy another rope to use up my remaining gold.

This thread is already getting away from me. I tell you, I spend 20 minutes commuting and you lot double the amount of pages.

I'm going to draw my character and do the sheet now.
