Re: The Room 101 thread - for things you hate or just having a bloody good moan
Never heard of it either.
Oh, I have thought of two annoying things.
1. People who defensively fall back on what they can get away with legally, rather than doing what is courteous and civil toward others.
For example, our neighbours in our semi-detached house arrangement have loud parties pretty much every couple of months, where about 20 people descend into our shared front yard and yell loudly in their barbarous native dialect (Scottish) and play thudding base music which reverberates throughout the whole building, late into the night.
When my wife confronted them about it the last time it happened (before tonight, when it's happening again, which is what reminded me of this), their response was not regret or apology for causing us inconvenience or discomfort (as mine would have been if they had complained about something we had done that had affected our shared space, or their peace), but merely reeling off their legal rights (which they frequently violate, I should mention).
2. Edinburgh dog owners, most of whom apparently believe that, because they love their dog, everyone else ought to as well, no matter what it does. The number of times a dog has attacked, intimidated or chased my children when we are out and about, and the owner has been annoyed at us for not being super happy about the dog's behaviour, or not instantly falling on our knees and worshipping it for just being their dog, is irritatingly high.

My fire is more than can be made with forests,
My state more base than are the basest valleys;
I wish no evenings more to see, each evening;
Shamed, I hate myself in sight of mountains,
And stop mine ears, lest I grow mad with music.

Ha! Exactly! You know this phenomenon well I see. The dog is always the first thing they defend, rather than showing remorse for its antisocial behaviour.
This trend was once subverted by a long-haired dude, whose dog ran at, bit and destroyed my son's football while we were at a park. He immediately walked up to me, apologised and offered me £2 to buy a new ball. Top chap.

Funnily enough a similar thing happened to us.
Ultimately people aren't all bad all the time, there are decent folk in the world. It's just a shame that for the most part there's never one around when you need them.

But not my neighbours, whose loud, drunken, base-thudding party last night went on until sunrise.

I’m lucky that I’m rarely subjected to that level of all-night noise, but I’ve had a couple of occasions where it’s done my nut in. The police don’t want to hear about it and just refer you to the council, which is zero use unless it’s a regular occurrence. Given your situation, I’d be looking for any reason at all to get the police involved - suspected threats of violence, drugs, etc. Anything to get them to disperse and shut the fuck up.
On the subject of infuriating noise disturbances, have I already ranted in this thread about burglar alarms? If so, I’m going in again. Burglar alarms: what is the point in them other than to advertise that nobody is in the property?

This may hurt you from lack of sleep as well but when they go to sleep after a party that is when you play your music really loud in the gardenStormbringer wrote: ↑Sun Aug 25, 2019 7:35 amBut not my neighbours, whose loud, drunken, base-thudding party last night went on until sunrise.
or try ear plugs and a noise cancellation headphone at the same time

I don’t believe in paying people back bad for bad, nor getting into passive aggressive wars.
However, we are now thinking of moving house.

Smart meters.

Oh, thanks for the spelling correction.
You know what else is annoying? When people use the wrong spelling for a word!

English is fucking stupid anyway. Almost nobody outside of professional writers gets it's/its correct because it's fucking stupid, but it still annoys me.
Most things: apostrophe for possessive.
Pronouns: lol no.
His, hers, theirs, yours, ours, its, whose.
