The moon!
At night it's absolutely beautiful and for many years I have loved gazing up at its silvery glow. However, I have an especial love of the moon when it appears in the day-time in a clear, sunny autumn sky.
Once, when I was in high-school, I guess about 20 years ago, I was sitting in a really boring geography lesson on a sunny afternoon in early autumn. I looked out of the window at about 2:45 and saw the moon hanging in the sky just above the trees that lined the nearby road. I felt a sense of real peace and tranquility from looking at it, reminding me that in just a few minutes' time the school day would end I would be on my way home beneath its calm, watchful gaze.
Ever since then, whenever I see the moon in a clear sky on a sunny, autumn day, I think back to that moment and the peace I felt, and think about how, no matter how crazy things seem on earth, the moon is always there, looking down, ever the same.
My fire is more than can be made with forests,
My state more base than are the basest valleys;
I wish no evenings more to see, each evening;
Shamed, I hate myself in sight of mountains,
And stop mine ears, lest I grow mad with music.
