Flight Simulator 2020

Post by Wrathbone » Mon Aug 03, 2020 1:07 pm

Anybody else digging out their peripherals and donning their aviation goggles for this? There's been a load of new videos in the last couple of weeks showing it off in all its splendour and it looks breathtaking.

I'm tempted to invest in some rudder pedals to go with my X-52, and maybe even a proper yoke system, but I'll wait for the game first (18th August).

Probably not. I may have all the kit, but civilian aviation isn't that appealing to me, despite the amazing things Microsoft have done with their terrain engine. Still, if it's on gamepass there's a possibility I'll give it a shot. There's the minor draw of using it as a sort of Google Earth with a difficulty curve, but I can't see that having much lasting appeal.

I like military aviation sims, but civilian aviation is definitely my thing. It's the gaming equivalent of Bob Ross. One of my favourite games of all time was Flight Unlimited III for the sheer relaxation-coma that it put you in while taxiing around, giving proper radio calls and responses, then going for a pleasant flight around San Francisco bay.

FS 2020 looks groundbreaking to me - the first true leap to the new generation. And Bing maps has finally become useful, in the most unlikely way imaginable! :o

I’ll probably fly over Glasgow, think “that’s neat” and then uninstall it. Prime use of game pass.

Isn't its install going to be about a terabyte?

Nope, about 150gb I read (still huge of course) with terrain and other data streamed. Digital Foundry played 10 hours and it streamed 7gb of data, which doesn't sound terrible.

I don't have anything against civilian aviation per se, it's just that I'm used to flying aircraft that have a stall speed higher than the maximum speed of that Cessna in the video above. Also, it's rare that I just take a plane up to fly, I have to have an objective other than just landing at the other end.

Also, speaking of rudder pedals Wrath, I might actually have my old set knocking around that I could pass on for far less than you'd get them new. They might need a bit of silicone grease, but they'll probably do the trick if you're interested.

Cheers, will see how I get on with the game and decide if I want to kit myself out. :)

This looks amazing, but I kinda know that the initial "Ooh" factor would be all I would get from it. I would fly from Blackbushe airport over my house, and that would be that I suspect. I have always liked the concept of flight simulations but never the reality.

I have the gear and I’m intrigued by the streaming scenery so I’m going to have a look. I’m guessing I’ll do my normal mess around for a few days then return to DCS though. At least this time I won’t have spent eye watering quantities of cash on scenery though...

Since there’s only one 3D mapped city in the UK on bing maps and it’s pretty obvious what that one city would be.... Southampton. So if you’re not from Southampton you shouldn’t expect to see much visual accuracy beyond street shapes. No finding your house and flying into your local Asda :(

If only there were a much better repository of maps freely available somewhere

I know right? In fact I broke out the GoogleEarth VR app again. It really is awesome flying over your house like superman :)

Luckily for low attention-spans, the game seems to come with challenges and things to do other than fly around bemoaning the fact your house isn't in the game.
