Chernobylite

Post by Lee » Thu Feb 07, 2019 3:45 pm

Chernobylite is a science-fiction survival horror experience from the team behind the critically acclaimed Get Even. The game mixes the free exploration of its disturbing world with challenging combat, unique crafting, and non-linear storytelling. This exceptional title will constantly challenge you to

Explore the beautiful and horrifyingly accurate 3D-scanned recreation of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
Collaborate or compete with other stalkers of the Zone. But whatever you do, never fully trust them. Remember everybody has a hidden agenda. Always.
Face and survive the natural and supernatural threats.
Immerse yourself in the non-linear, thrilling, science-fiction horror story.
Make good use of your physics and chemistry knowledge to craft your equipment and manage your supplies.
Fight against the savage creatures pouring out from an alternate reality.
Investigate and collect data with a set of sophisticated environment and substance-analyzing tools.

Okay this just smacks of STALKER and for that is one to keep an eye on :D

Grabbed it last night and recorded my first time playing it. No commentary through the video. Really liking it so far, bit of companions and build your base as well to recoup in after missions.

Looks interesting. Quite a Jacob's Ladder vibe to the early mobs.

Can't recall Jacobs Ladder myself but it does have a interesting way of handling your character dying that I found out. You start from Day 1 again but you keep your progression (you do level up with new skills and base upgrades) but missions and people all act differently/weirdly and you can use your previous game to answer or bypass certain dialogue choices.

AI is super smart though, sees you and will endlessly shoot at windows that are unbreakable it seems. But that is being worked on. Also needs a bit of working on their reaction times as you can walk nearly in front of some of them and not be noticed.

One glaring bug is a mission with you having to hack a server and the last point on the map is no where near the location so expect to die to radiation if you go for it. Can you guess how I died now :-"

It is a really good film, worth a re-watch if you can't recall it.

I remember an interview with the director where he said that the problem with horror films is you get to see things for too long and your brain starts to reconcile what you are seeing - obvious prosthetics, little things that make the scares less. In JL they worked out what the maximum time was between the shock and the reconciliation and made each visual just short enough that you got the impression but not the detail - I saw it in the cinema and it scared the living piss out of me.

The bit that springs to mind is a scene on the NY subway, where the protagonist gets off the train in a hurry because reasons (was a while ago since I watched it) and as you see the back of the train vanish into the subway tunnel there is a figure standing motionless in the rear driver's compartment except for his head which is vibrating like mad - that was immediately what the early sightings of the baddies in this reminded me of.

Aye decided to watch it earlier and yep very good film indeed. I see what you mean with the creatures with the weird head/body moving super fast and out of sync. Fuckers still spook me when getting behind me while looting the buildings.

Watched JL when I was quite young, 12/13 something like that, it scared the bejesus out of me, been very few films down the years that have freaked me out like that.

There's not a whole lot to the game still a couple of levels and the base mechanics in place. With other places still to come to explore in. IF you don't mind that and like the Stalker series it's a good deal though :)

This is coming out, it looks like, with a pretty positive review in PCG:

I think this is one I'll definitely check out at some point.

So... it turns out that "at some point" in this case meant "within moments of hitting Steam"

Will report back with thoughts.

Ha, I've actually not even loaded it up yet! My gaming time is a bit sporadic at the moment with some work stuff, kids at home on summer hols and a puppy who apparently can't be out of my sight for more than a few seconds.

Kinda wanted a decent spell of uninterrupted gaming to sink my teeth into this, but soon hopefully.
