The Suicide Squad

If there had been any sex in the film it would have been an 18 that's how much strong bloody violence and gore there is in this film, it's more violent than the first Suicide Squad film although this time round there's more going on than is given away in the trailer.

However the setup of bad guys vs the worse guys is the same as the first film and Viola Davis's character is once again in charge and willing to do whatever it takes for the sake of the mission. Margot Robbie stands out as Harley Quinn once again but that's due to the story structure putting her in more locations than the other characters. Stay until the very end because there's an after credits scene that's serious following the mid credits scene that's played for laughs. This really is DC's Deadpool in terms of throwing comedy in amongst all that blood gore and violence and the IMAX filming isn't wasted when it comes to the close up action scenes near the end. The money's also on the screen when it comes to all the CGI in the film including two characters matching up and most likely a 4K digital intermediate if it was mostly filmed in IMAX.

Worth watching if you didn't mind Deadpool's level of violence and gore and action and brutal humour.

Hurricane (Netflix)

Some very ropey SFX which is a constant reminder this film had a little budget. To add to the frustration the dialogue was pretty shoddy as well. It was not a disaster as it is very watchable but Squadron 303 deserve a better film. You get a feeling it is wholly keeping an eye on Brexit.

The Witcher Nightmare of the Wolf
Netflix once off animated film from The Witcher universe. I think it's the same people that did Castlevania, same animation style and some of the same voice actors anyway. It's not spectacular but still pretty good and worth a watch. Has the same insane action scenes and gore from Castlevania so that's a plus

The Green Knight
That was very strange to say the least, a Terry Gilliam film not made by Terry Gilliam is the best way to describe it I think. Visually very impressive but let down by a confusing story and some ropey acting which I don't think is any of the actors fault. Certainly worth a watch and it's great that they still make films like this but probably not for everyone. It might be the sort of thing that improves from a few watches or if you've just taken magic mushrooms...

I really enjoyed this. It's a very loose adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry V, and from what I understand isn't historically accurate, but it's well acted (Timothée Chalamet is fantastic), the dialogue is better written than most films I've seen recently, and the action scenes are really well done (though a little too familiar having seen Game of Thrones).

It's a very loose adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry V, and from what I understand isn't historically accurate, but it's well acted (Timothée Chalamet is fantastic), the dialogue is better written than most films I've seen recently, and the action scenes are really well done (though a little too familiar having seen Game of Thrones).

The beheading was so bloody realistic I had to watch it again to try and see where it went to CGI. Very good film.

There aren't a great many films I could name that leave me feeling a bit... empty, after they end - as in I'm so absorbed by their world that the fact that there isn't any more is just disappointing. Blade Runner 2049 is one of those films. I honestly think it may be the best sci-fi film I've ever seen, and sci-fi is kinda my genre. Every single shot is beautiful, the soundtrack is glorious, the sets and props just ooze worldbuilding, I love the story and the characters, and it doesn't feel... pompous as the first film did.

I actually don't think much of the original Blade Runner. It has some of the same positives as the sequel, hell, some of those in the sequel are lifted directly from the first, but there's just something about it that doesn't work for me. I don't like Roy Batty as a character (it doesn't help that the name makes him sound like he's from Coronation Street), I don't think the story is especially strong, and that final "tears in the rain" speech just makes it feel like it thinks of itself a bit too highly. It was a stunning piece of design, but it always felt a bit hollow to me - it leaves me cold. The sequel is, in my opinion, better in every way.

The scene where K and Deckard fight in the deteriorating casino, filled with glitching holograms of Elvis, is just staggeringly good. Like every dimly lit scene in this film, the lighting is stunning, and I absolutely adore the use of silence. Every other film would have just had the song playing in the background, but having a silent Elvis gyrating in the distance while every so often you get a punch of the actual music... it's just the perfect mix of futuristic and decay, and it speaks volumes about the world these characters inhabit.

I hold the first one in pretty high regard for various reasons, but 2049 is a cinematic masterpiece. It's one of my absolute favourite films. A lot of that is down to the absolute masters of their craft, Roger Deakins and Denis Villeneuve. The use of silence is a technique utilised quite a few times during the film and it really works wonders at just letting the cinematography speak for itself and absorb you. The world they present is this strange cocktail of oppressive, bleak and beautiful and the music lends itself perfectly to every moment of that.
