These idiots are making news daily now - A history of GQPish anti-science, bait-their-base antics, then succumbing to their own ignorance. He's infected his wife and 5-month old son too. The Texas GOP Twitter doesn't even mention how he died or use the opportunity to urge people to vaccinate and be careful. The utter moral corruption of "owning the libs for votes" is breathtaking. In the space of a week, Desantis has gone from telling Biden "I don't want to hear a blip about covid from you", to begging for 300 ventilators. Meanwhile overwhelmed hospitals, full of the unvaxed, mean vaxed patients with other conditions are now turned away. The utter bankruptcy of humanity is despairing.

I have very little sympathy for people like that. Willful ignorance and stupidity don't just deserve any.

I finally looked up what GOP stood for after seeing it for years. I assumed it was something like Government Of the President or similar. Grand Old Party....really!?

It ain't over, all these mass events are setting up a mighty resurgence soon I fear. Also, a worrying new mutation - the furthest yet from the original strain - is showing up, most notably in South Africa.

I dread to think what the endgame for this is going to be if we start getting highly infectious new strains that evade the vaccines every six months.

Our entire way of life would need a rethink in that situation, because whilst I didn't do so badly at all over the last year and a half I really can't imagine living in a state of quasi-lockdowns forever.

The biggest takeaway is: action as soon as possible, and not relaxing into "back to normal now" as has been the case.

And yeah, this is basically what I've been expecting for over a year now. Every person infected is another tiny chance for a virus to mutate, and Covid 19 has millions of these tiny chances. Eventually someone's going to incubate a variant that the vaccine can't prevent, and we're back to square one.

As usual, the worst, most ignorant "but I'm special and don't care about anyone else" of society will be the route back to square one...which would be ok if it could be seen that Covid mutations would dilute down to flu/cold level symptoms. The work it does on the lungs and other organs though makes it more worrying.

It's too late for any country to be aiming for zero covid. The vaccines don't fully stop tranmission (only reduce it to some extent), but they do massively reduce hospitalisations and deaths. The virus will have endless opportunities to mutate in the future anyway. I think at this point lockdowns are only necessary in times of extreme strain on the health service.
