Just binge watched the first season (I think..it seemed to stop in a weird place). But wow, that was weird.
I do like how they've managed to make me think Kevin is a master manipulator but then switch back to thinking Allison is the master manipulator, then back again several times. Very clever.
Plus I have decided that Annie Murphy is quite hot

Squid Game
South Korean show on Netflix about a down on his luck dip shit that gets roped into a survival game. Bit slow to start but loving it so far.

Finished this last night at it's really great. A better description might be in order. A large group of financially screwed people take part in a battle royale style game to win a fuck ton of cash. It being Korean it gets pretty messy and messed up. The games get more and more cruel as the players are whittled down. Visually it's very striking and unique looking. There will be an inevitable US remake no doubt.

I've been watching Korean TV a fair bit lately. Overall, I'm fairly impressed, they seem to marry outlandish plots with some really good acting which raises things far above what the plot line would seem to indicate.They also have a knack of throwing in humour (that works) at unexpected moments.

Lol, yeah, just seen that one. A lot of the IMDB comments, from people who love the show otherwise, say that was the low point for them. It's... not good. Bafflingly so.

So I finished Squid Game this evening. It's good overall, but I knew from early on that the translation supposedly isn't great (there was a headline on Reddit I think a few days back) which I think coloured my impression somewhat. It's all really well acted and shot, but the ending left me a bit cold. Massive spoilers follow:

I think I twigged that the old chap (I'm sorry, I can't remember a single character name with the exception of Gi Hun) had more to him than just being another player right from the start. It was that gleeful look on his face during Red Light Green Light that suggested he wasn't being affected by the game the same way as everyone else. Even so, I didn't think much of his reveal in the last episode, it just felt like a bait and switch - the end of the marbles episode was a real gut punch and reveal that he was still alive just took away from that a bit (although everything else in that episode stood strongly).

But fucking hell, the reveal that Sang-woo had stabbed Sae-byeok (I looked them up) in the neck as she lay dying in her bed made me yell at the TV. I should have seen it coming really, but I just wasn't expecting something that utterly heartless.

I would say definitely, given the ending. I'm expecting it to be Gi Hun trying to take it down from within somehow, but not sure it will be as compelling.
