Re: Aaand, In Other News...
The very definition of misadventure. Although I'm sure that negligence will come up soon enough.
Being matter of fact about it, it's not a tradgedy - more stupidity on a grand scale, bizarrely James Cameron has given a very level view of things. As other have noted, the worst part is the amount of media coverage it's had has been crazy.

No, you're all right of course after thinking on it and to Mantis - I apologise for the singling out. At the time of posting I was reading up about how the billionaires 19 year old son was visibly petrified to get inside the capsule and was on the verge of backing out, he only went through with it to please his dad for Father's day...
'But it was a Father’s Day thing. It was a bonding experience and he wanted the adventure of a lifetime just like his father did.'
There's no denying there was a catastrophic amount of negligence at play and the entire thing was completely avoidable.

I'd not read that. That's very sad. We've become very trusting of technology (i'm not sure trusting is the right word) these days, such as treating air travel like catching a bus. We forgot that everything goes through masses of trails before becoming mainstream and anything that is in a hostile environment has lots of redundant systems.Lennyquantum wrote: ↑Fri Jun 23, 2023 10:01 amNo, you're all right of course after thinking on it and to Mantis - I apologise for the singling out. Visibly rolled my eyes just now when popping to the shop for a sandwich, pretty much every headline today reads "Titanic claims another five lives".

If it's any consolation for the families, the extreme pressure during the implosion caused the air inside the sub to burn at several thousand degrees before it broke apart. This happened in a fraction of a second so they were dead before the sound of the implosion even formed. Not a nice way to go but no suffering.

I'd read an article about this but not watched it. There's a huge amount of scorn there from Cameron and he can totally be considered an expert at this point too.
What a bloody fiasco.

Imagine having the kind of technology in the palm of your hand that we now have and still being this profoundly stupid, consorting everything into instant conspiracy fodder. The mind boggles.

Re: Aaand, In Other News...
I don't think the technology helps honestly, for many people it's replaced actual thinking, and that's before you get to all the actively misleading information flying around available at the touch of a button.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office for a large part of the UK - forecasting torrential downpours which could lead to flash flooding.
