You know it didn’t click with me on release and I gave up fairly quick but now I’m downloading it to give it another shot!
It really sings when you have a group on co-op on comms. You are welcome to jump in on Discord and join us some time, there are folks about most evenings (and days probably over the coming Xmas period).

Also the game comes into its own when you reach the level cap and have a fleshed out character with a range of abilities, I can understand how you could bounce off it playing individually with randoms, as the experience can vary wildly.

Feeling my age this week, mainly been playing retro games. Retrobat with a host of old console games. Most are soooo hard! How did we ever play these beasts?
Also stumped up some GOG money to play Wing Commander 3 and 4. I owned them back in the day but no idea where the disks live nowadays.

it's infinitely better if you play with people you know on voice comms. You're welcome to join us on the Discord if you fancy.
Invite is much appreciated but with my work hours I I tend to only game when the Aussies, Chinese and the unemployed do so its not ideal ;)

Only had a chance to give it a quick spin but yeah, seems fun. It just has that thing all these games have where everyone else knows exactly where they are going and blazes ahead, if I take one wrong turn for one second woe betide me!

Caves Of Qud
First time in what, 30 years? (  ) Ive felt a game is a true successor to ADOM. This thing seems incredible. That said I dont feel I'm in the right mindset to enjoy it properly right now for whatever reason (its hard to explain!) but very much look forward to coming back to it.

Virtua Fighter REVO beta
Finally VF on PC! Feels great, reasonably priced for its full Feb release too. A nice stopgap till we get VF6

Well if you get the chance, hop in mate :)

And yeah, the suddenly finding that everyone else has fucked off, you are on your own, and you can hear an incoming hound is a horror that we all get (especially playing with El Gaucho aka silverheels - as the group's tank I often fight rearguard, turn round on holding off the enemy only to have to squint to see the tiny markers on-screen  )

As the group newbie - read as moron - I often end up alone as I've still no clue what we are actually doing other than killing shit.

As someone who played 30 to 40 rounds I still often had no clue what was going on half the time.

Played some absolute corkers over Christmas:

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Reforged
About a decade ago there was a director's cut of Broken Sword which removed some of the inconsequential whimsy, added some dreadful new scenes with Nico that ground the game to a halt and basically butchered one of my favourite adventure games. Reforged undoes all of that - it's the original game but prettier, and it's excellent. The improvements to the artwork are just what they should be from a remaster, in the sense that the game looks how I remember it, until of course I tried the original graphics mode and realised how old it looks. A fantastic game where I find myself celebrating its dumber moments rather than lamenting them.

Dave the Diver
It's taken me a while to get round to it and it does in fact live up to the hype. Great fun! It could use a bit more breathing space, though, as it piles on tasks (many of them time-sensitive) when actually I'd mostly like to just explore around, catch some fish and run the sushi business.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
Finished this yesterday and loved it from start to end. It's Indy through and through, from amateur sneaking to whipping across ancient ruins to belting the living snot out of Nazis with a shovel. The length was spot on at 30 hours, with about two-thirds of the quests where you're collecting stuff completed, and once the credits have rolled you can go back to all previous locations and finish stuff off, which is handy.

Doom Eternal
This is my 2nd go at this after I bounced pretty hard on release. It was too difficult and the parkour drove me fucking nuts. This time I just dropped the difficulty and am loving it. The visuals are jaw dropping in places and loading times between levels are super quick. The feeling of pure badassery after tearing through a room full of enemies is hard to match. The over the top gore is wonderful and glory kills refilling your ammo is genius.

I still fucking hate the parkour, it's like someone making a beautiful cake then shitting on top of it. The flow of the game comes to an abrupt stop when you have to make 10 (or 30!)attempts to get up the side of a building. Mess the timing up and it's all the way back to try it again. Hate it.

Apart from that it's an awesome game.

Last year I played this great game called The Excavation of Hob's Barrow:

Sort of an Arthur Machen-esque-British-folk-horror point-and-click adventure. Very nicely done with top-notch atmosphere and an engaging tale.

Today, I bought another game by the same developer, called Sumatra: The Fate of Yandi.

Bit of an odd choice of story; it feels like it might be based on a true survival tale account...but I don't think it is.

I'm having a fun time with it! Nice to get back into a relaxing video game again.

I played two new pixel art point and click games last year, which I think you may enjoy Doug - have a look at Loco Motive and An English Haunting :)

I played the demo of An English Haunting tonight.

First rate stuff, Sly; thanks for making me aware of that. I'll be purchasing that game very soon, I think!

Just finished this.

Quite good. Some nice graphics and puzzles and great atmosphere, but a little short. Definitely a nice way to get back into point-and-clicks again, but I think I'm ready for something with a bit more depth.

So after that discussion on Doom: Dark Ages last week, I went back to Doom: Eternal, which I had loved upon release but had never finished (I'd gotten quite a long way in, three or four levels from the end). I think the gameplay loop in this is incredible, extremely fast and satisfying... but the game eventually starts throwing *so* much stuff at you in one fight that it starts to break down a little. Perhaps it's because I resumed playing the campaign halfway through (and I was playing on Ultra Violence), but I think the amount of mental discipline you need to activate the right abilities at the right times and not accidentally lob your ice grenade when you mean to use the flamethrower is just a bit too much, because it absolutely punishes you for even a second or two of stumbling around without any armour. It's also surprisingly difficult to hurt enemies just enough to get a glory kill without exploding them, so health gets annoyingly difficult to find when you're under pressure.

But to top it off, this game ends with one of the worst, most frustrating boss fights I've ever played. It's an absolute slog, the boss has such an insane amount of health, and being in the wrong spot as he punches the ground can lead to you losing almost all of your health and armour in one go, and there are so many very threatening enemies in the arena that you can't ignore, so if you're not being punched by the boss, you're being bitten by a Pain Elemental. On one attempt at the first phase, I must have been fighting constantly for ten minutes, and then got cheap-shot punched into a corner I couldn't get out of because I was being blocked in by a Baron of Hell and a Cacodemon, and died. I gave both phases a good, solid few tries, but ended up relenting and using the sentinel armour because I just did not care anymore. It's a bloody awful piece of game design to cap off a game that otherwise fucking rocks, and as the game just ends immediately when you kill the guy, it left me with a really sour taste in my mouth instead of any sense of achievement.

And fuck Cyber Mancubi. They are such pains in the arse in this; the only way to kill them quickly (without one of the three heavily resource-limited super weapons) is to blood punch them, but every single time I tried to do that they just do a nova attack which eats too much of my health. If you don't do this they take too long to kill and you get overwhelmed by everything around them.
