Re: Currently Playing
Playing a few at the moment..
Finished Doom: Eternal and really enjoyed it. That last boss was indeed a ballache and utterly unnecessary. I put the difficulty right down and was able to fudge through it. No interest in the multiplayer or the Horde levels.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
Definitely the most Indiana Jones thing since The Last Crusade, great stuff. The voice work is excellent, he really sounds like Harrison Ford. The level design and detail is wonderful, looks amazing in places. My few complaints might be that the stealth can be a bit iffy and you get sent over and back across the map multiple times.
Balatro
It's fine, I'm not seeing why it's getting the greatest thing ever some reviewers are giving it. To each their own I suppose.

Balatro takes its time for the hooks to sink it. I really like it - it's a great phone game for those moments waiting for a train and the like.

Re: Currently Playing
I gave it a few hours but its just not doing anything for me, I just find it pretty boring. Its not bad its just nowhere near what I was expecting, especially after the religious fervour surrounding it. I also found Vampire Survivors to be incredibly mind-numbing too so maybe I'm too old/grumpy/tired for these zeitgeist games. Balatro is better than VS though, that game was just trash :p
Shadow Gambit
I'm getting through this a lot slower than I did their previous games and thats mostly because of the open world thing where theres only 8 levels that you play on again and again and again and again. Different missions move some elements around but a lot of it is quite static. You can also land at different spots on the island and approach things differently and use different characters but I just feel the bespoke levels of their other games were so much better. Its unfortunate because the core game is fantastic, their different character archetypes are the most fun theyve come up with, the DLC is great and the missions are interesting. There's just a lot of levels that I start and sigh because I need to take out the same bunch of guys yet again. Its a great game, I do love it... I just wish I loved it a little bit more.
System Shock Remake
Just can't get into it. Its clunky, its ugly and it feels like a B tier 360 game. Yeah I know the beloved original was clunky and ugly but its a remake, they should fix that ¬_¬

Yeah, agree on Shadow Gambit actually. I've still yet to finish it - I'm probably less than a third of the way through it honestly.Alan wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2025 12:17 pmI gave it a few hours but its just not doing anything for me, I just find it pretty boring. Can't remember if I already recommended it to you, but if not check out Sumerian Six, it's a really good continuation of Mimimi's style of game.

Yip, was very underwhelmed by this as well. As mentioned, it's clunky and butt ugly.

Born Punk
Pixel-art point and click adventure. It has a cyberpunk theme and the screenshots looked quite cool, though the trailer didn't enthuse me. The actual game, though, is very impressive! Wonderful atmosphere and visuals, with an incredible amount of detailed dialogue, ALL VOICE ACTED. Someone put a lot of effort into this!

Avowed
It's OK.
It's more like Hogwarts Legacy than a proper RPG.
I'm about 10 hours in (I have it preloaded for xbox gamepass) but thought I'd have a dabble at a 'demo' version.
I want to finish it as the story is tolerable.
7/10

I pre-loaded it yesterday, more from curiousity than anything, although no idea if/when I'll actually get around to playing it!

Re: Currently Playing
To be fair to Obsidian, that seems to be what they're aiming for:
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/obsid ... ble-games/
Mixed feelings about that. Keeping your ambitions realisitc and pragmatic is sensible, and there is absolutely a place for good-quality 7/10 games, but I fear they could quickly lose their core audience through apathy. Best case scenario, they keep producing sleeper gems like Pentiment, making games with an indie spirit where the quality exceeds the resources; worst case scenario doesn't bear thinking about.
On the other hand, Bioware went in the opposite direction, chasing AAA with bells on at the behest of EA, and that didn't work out for them. Maybe there's method in Obsidian's mediocrity.
Re: Currently Playing
What I want from an Obsidian game is great writing, interesting characters and meaningful choices... I don't feel like those should be restricted to big budget AAA games, which is why it feels a bit disappointing, from what I've read, that those are the weakest areas of Avowed. I've seen 'wide as the ocean, shallow as a puddle' in a few places, and that's kind of the opposite of what I look for in their games, feels like they've tried to cast a wide net in terms of attracting more casual or new players rather than catering to their core fanbase.
There's a place for games like that, and I might even play them like I did Outer Worlds, but they aren't games that will see me rushing back to play that studio's next games, or even remain in my memory beyond the credits. They're the popcorn-action-movie of gaming, which is fine, but for a studio with the track record of Obsidian, I think it's a shame.

Sniper Elite Resistance
Latest Sniper Elite game. It's basically SE5 but with a different protagonist, that doesn't take away from the fact it's a very fun game. Bursting Nazi skulls from hundreds of meters away never gets old, all in slow motion and glorious x-ray. It does very little that's new but it's definitely a case of it ain't broke don't fix it. The story is the Nazis have a new super weapon and blah blah blah, the plot is irrelevant in this series.
One super fun feature is Axis Invasion where you can jump into some randoms single player game as a German sniper and try kill them. I've done it 4 times and got 3 kills, extremely satisfying especially when they rage quit
Have unlocked all the mission weapons and done pretty much everything you can do so I'll probably uninstall soon. That's the great thing about SE games, play until you've had your fill and move on happy.

Re: Currently Playing
I almost bought Resistance myself, then realised that I'd only put 12.2 hours into SE5 and as the games are rather replayable I've opted to go back to that instead and get significant more mileage out of it. Watching the endless amount of Axis Invasion videos that are about never fail to entertain, somehow they all tend to be Brits who are pretty skilled at the game too.
As for Avowed, I'm pretty torn on what I've seen so far. On one hand it very much looks like the Dark Messiah open world sword and spell style experience I always hoped for, but something about how the game looks in tone is making me somewhat less interested. UE5 can deliver in scope scale and density that we can all agree on, but why does the world look so damn sterile? Like when you disable all shadow elements and ambient occlusion in a game and are left with the most basic lighting possible, in comparison to how they first showed us the game which obviously got everyone excited about a Skyrim style game upon release it almost looks like another Wonderlands Borderlands game in part with certain UI enemy types and open areas.
I may pick it up when it's on sale because the combat design can and does make it look seriously solid fun.

If you want to play those Dave, maybe just get Game Pass for a bit to try them out? They're both there...

Re: Currently Playing
As much as that makes sense Sly bud I've had nothing but issues with Game pass for the duration. I've tried multiple games after paying and not been able to play a single one and simply end up refunding each and every attempt. Just my luck.
Snowy even very graciously gifted me a copy Forza 5 and after initially thinking this would be the game to break the lengthy curse once I'd installed I ended up with not one but two log in procedures that would just sit there revolving - nothing would happen. We did end up playing some Crew Motorfest together alternatively but man...GP just does not want to dance with me properly at all, I've never been able to figure out why exactly. The game pass folder still sits in my drive, I'm completely unable to remove it to this day.
