It could have been something more innocent like a carbon monoxide leak. I can't imagine anyone taking the life of their pet.

I saw a resent photo of Gene Hackman and he was unrecognizable, then I remembered he was 95 years old and retired about 20 years ago.

One of my favorite roles of his is the blind hermit in Young Frankenstein, comedy gold.
