I was just reflecting to myself "I don't think there's anyway back from this now."

I may be doom-mongering or catastrophising, but I think this will become, and already is, the spark for ramping up the political divide in the US to even greater and more extreme heights. This won't be the last of these incidents. They will become normalised before long.

I wonder what the identity of the killer, who I understand they have in custody now, will reveal.

At this point I don't think anything is going to stop it eventually boiling over even further, arguably it already has given that there is currently an armed political law enforcement arm going around American cities forcibly detaining completely innocent people.

I've just watched a recent clip of Trump on a Fox News programme, sitting in the studio like he's on The One Show talking about his prize-winning magnolias (albeit less dignified), casually saying that he hopes that Kirk's killer gets the death penalty. There's a pretty good chance he knows absolutely nothing about this man. No calls for calm, no hopes for peace, just 'he killed my guy so I'm hoping my guys kill him'. These people stake significant portions of their appeal on being Christian, while displaying absolutely none of the values that religion is supposed to instil as if it's all some sort of performative bullshit.

As a great king once said, "So much death. What can men do against such reckless hate?"

When one side of governance PURPOSELY employs propaganda not based on truth, but on what they want you to believe, it only gets worse until the force for good breaks and violence restores order. And it really is ONE side, "Libs" are, for the most part, driven by facts foremost. It is part of human history since humans were a thing: good allows only so much malignancy before it HAS to act.

Part of the problem is that large swathes of the American right (and possibly the left, though I've not seen any evidence of that) aren't just fired up over political differences - they seem to actually want a civil war to hash things out. It's not like the right aren't getting exactly what they asked for in political terms at the moment. It would make more sense if Harris had won and the right were going bananas over her actions, but instead they've got the shitty, lawless government they demanded and they're still banging on about taking their country back from the left.

Whether it's just pent-up bloodlust for killing liberals, or stoking of the flames from people like Charlie Kirk, or a subconscious desire to justfiy their perceived need for the second amendment, or a combination of all those, I don't know. But they appear to want a war, and they're heading in the right direction to get one.

I'll be honest I don't follow US politics closely so the names involved mean nothing to me, but some US based folks I know were just saying the shooter is into some RW commentator called Nick Fuentes - apparently he and Kirk used to be close but recently fell out due to the latter's position on Israel. Also apparently, Kirk had told friends a while ago that if he changed his position on that issue he half-expected to be targeted.
