So, as I said on the old forum, I'm mostly playing Chess these days.

I still have my Dungeons & Dragons: Adventure System collection (five games in total). Of all the board games that have been released since 2010, I've found these to have the most staying power in my collection. The rules are simple and well-designed and the components are nice. Shame I never actually get the opportunity to play them!

Am (still) in the middle of painting Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower, have Warhammer Quest: Shadow over Hammerhall still to open, and my mates have conned me into playing Kill Team, which as far as I can tell is Warhammer 40K: Gateway drugs.

It always escalates, my friend. Next it'll be 40k because you already have scenery for Kill Team and you really enjoyed painting that one squad.

The whole point of WHQ was the self contained nature.
Buy the box, jobs done.
I played 40k during 2nd or maybe 3rd edition and have no intent of going back to it.
But I do find painting therapeutic. Found a load of my old models today in fact, younger me was no painter

It's funny you mention it being therapeutic. One of the prisons I speak to in the course of my work recently started a new therapy course to rehabilitate and generally improve the behaviour of prisoners, which involves the painting of Games Workshop figurines, apparently it's been working really well.

I got back into painting figures around 8-10 years back, but stopped a few years ago. I did enjoy it, but I'm such a painfully slow painter I barely completed 4 or 5 models. Although I was really happy with the results.

Plus, using the magnifier for any amount of time was giving me eye strain.

To be fair, those expansions and optional extras were there as enhancements, not mandatory purchases. You're a completionist though, so it was a curse upon thee!

The original Space Crusade from the early 90's was immense. Also the amount of figures you got for the price was incredible compared to now.

I am quite interested in this also. I completely missed Talisman in my rise to geekdom. Perhaps this is the version I should start with (the way I understand the earlier editions to work makes me suspect my wife wouldn't be as keen to play, but co-op she will enjoy).

I had it several times, and when I did find people to play it with properly I discovered that it's not actually that great compared with other games I'm so sorry...

It's true, the rules are a tad basic and it can be a bit limited. Much preferred Advanced Heroquest personally.

Space Crusade also had better rules I think. At the time they were seen as the fantasy/space versions of the same game, but one was much superior to the other in reality.

I think the love for HeroQuest is more to do with it acting as a gateway into the hobby for so many in the early 90s.
