Does the light from our cell shed enough on the one across the hall to see what's inside?

The only light is the torch in Malaiz' hand. You could borrow it, once he's finished rifling through the jailer's corpse.

Or, you could make an improvised torch from a charred bone and a strip of cloth from the jailer's shirt, and light it from his torch!

I look at Wemut's corpse, described as disgusting and flaccid. Then I peer over at Malaiz, our fat, suspicious hermit. And cogs turn.

"Malaiz," I call out gently, "do you think Wemut's clothes would fit you? And do you think you could do a vague impersonation of his voice?"

Malaiz is offended by the comparison, he might be a stinky, slovenly, tad obese excuse for a person, but he has feelings...

In a bag on Wemut's corpse, you find a flayed human face. Malaiz doesn't recognise it, but Lord Margar does: it is the face of an infamous witch-hunter who used to operate in this region. Despised by all. Apparently he met his end at Castle Risten.

So is Malaiz still required to put the clothes of a corpse on who died a violent and sudden death and who apparently emptied his bowels when expiring?

Giant will make an improvised torch in the suggested manner.

It's up to you. You don't have to obey Lord Margar!

"Only if you feel like it, good hermit. I thought perhaps we could escape with the old prisoner transfer ploy, but it may be a long shot regardless."

I'll take the witch-hunter's face, reluctantly, with an idea for using it if all else fails (i.e. I'll go full Nic Cage).

Doing this, you're able to explore around the jail outside the cell.

It is quiet, dark, cold and damp, and empty of life except for the rats which scurry about in the shadows cast by your torch.

There are six cells (yours is the north-eastern cell): all are empty, save one: a corpse lies in the central south cell.

A flight of steps leads upward to the west, at the end of the hallway.

I also feel it is my duty as your GM to remind you that there's another dagger lying on the floor of the cell in which you left: it came from the skeleton which Giant Dances the Sea destroyed with Wemut's oil-lamp.

Anyone want the dagger? I grab it if not.

Malaiz, with extreme reluctance, undresses the already stiffening corpse of the jailer. The smell is a heady mixture of blood, shit and BO that would make a skunk weep. This is coming from someone with poor personal hygiene at the best of times.

The jailers clothes actually fit quite well and Malaiz feels strangely comfortable...

I hand Malaiz the keys and encourage him to be ready to deploy Welmut's surly disposition should we meet anybody.

Carrying a flayed face around? I'm amused that somehow actual-cannibal Fechr is not the grimmest person in the room.

If the room is relatively dark, can I tell whether the door at the far end of the hall has either daylight or torchlight on the other side?

There is no door, just a staircase, leading up. No light comes from it, but you can find your way to it with the light from Malaiz' and GDTS' improvised torches.

Giant pokes a gnarled digit towards the cell containing a corpse to suggest a bit of light looting before moving on from this area...
