The Room 102 thread - for things you love or just having a bloody good praise!
Re: The Room 102 thread - for things you love or just having a bloody good praise!
I suspect this is one of those things where they've given the job to the office junior, and then someone higher up has signed off on it because they don't understand TikTok trends (not that I can claim any better here). You would think that any sort of media professional would consider that maybe using any sort of foreign language material without translating it is... risky. it's like one of those stories where someone gets "Translation Server Error" tattooed on their arm in Japanese.
Also maybe hire an actual professional instead of trusting your public messaging to AI.

Even ignoring the translation thing, in what world did a gargantuan, ripped bulldog in a police uniform seem like good messaging? May as well put Judge Dredd on there.

I think I honestly find the use of AI art - both generally, and that AI art in particular - even more offensive than the choice of music

TalkTalk's new 940 Mbps broadband deal.
I was within Virgin Media for years on end, supposedly getting a 1Gb service that I paid £75 a month for. For that price, I had a dodgy connection that would regularly cut out throughout the day, Wi-Fi that didn't cover my whole house, and in reality I had 900Mbps download (on a good day) with 30 Mbps upload.
One day, a few weeks ago, I got a leaflet through the door from TalkTalk, saying: "We're offering 940 Mbps, FULL-FIBRE, for £28 a month. Erm...INSTA-BUY? Now I have perfect 940 Mbps download AND upload, brand new Amazon Eero 6 routers that cover my whole house, no connection failures, and all for less than half the price of Virgin. Insane. But I'm grateful!

My fire is more than can be made with forests,
My state more base than are the basest valleys;
I wish no evenings more to see, each evening;
Shamed, I hate myself in sight of mountains,
And stop mine ears, lest I grow mad with music.

ChatGPT.
Amazing tool. I use it practically every day, for a multitude of reasons. Not for generative art, though. That part sucks.

How do you all feel about AI here on TGA?

I was part of a government trial to use AI in our day to day coding stuff.
I spent quite a while arguing with it as it didn't stick to our usual patterns when giving advice.
However it did help with monotonous tasks that I was surprised how quickly it autocompleted boilerplate stuff.
It's also useful to ask it: what's this, when I don't recognise some new bit of code.
It looks like we'll be embracing it fully in the future (depending on costs and general feedback from the pilot)

LLM AI - I see it as a tool that’s useful in some circumstances but is often wrong, as it places priority on the appearance of being correct over actual accuracy. There is a place for it and it will improve with time.
Generative art AI - A blight that threatens creative jobs and wastes obscene amounts of energy, pure and simple.
AGI, as in human-level intelligence or above by definition - Not on the horizon, but theoretically exciting and terrifying in equal measure. There are still difficult questions around consciousness that need better research and discussion before true AGI can be understood, let alone developed.

Yeah, the art is sickening, both to look at, and in how it is used to bypass the requirement for skilled artists, but I think the text-based chat is an incredibly useful tool. I honestly don't know how I functioned without it now, like the first time I wore glasses and realised what I'd been missing.

That's the danger, though - many people are becoming so reliant on it that accuracy of information is going to severely eroded, far more than it already has in the post-truth era. Most people are going to assume what it gives them is correct, when that's simply wrong on a frequent basis.
I don't think we're far off a point where the writing style and idiosyncrasies of LLMs are going to feed back into the populace due to overexposure, such that we start talking and writing like LLMs. I find that quite unsettling.

Well, I for one have found my health massively improved after eating a rock a day and putting glue on my pizzas.

The world feels like it's collapsing around us but the weather is just beautiful at the moment. Clear blue skies and only the gentlest of breezes. Nice.
